One day last week, he chose not to eat both his morning and his evening meals (raw food) but the next day he ate normally. It seems like he just naturally wanted a fast day, as it was his choice not to eat. So, it made me wonder how many of you fast your dogs once a week? Or How many of you have dogs that opt not to eat a meal or two once a week? Joyce Salazar

I have one who has a tiny bit of bile-vomiting if his stomach is very very empty, so I just don't do it. I don't even know for sure that I would anyway, although I understand all the arguments for it. I don't free-feed, though, and I definitely do not overfeed. They are hungry for every meal (as they should be), and if they were not, then I would closely examine my feeding habits and my structured exercising of them. I would look at the dog's body condition. If the dog was maintaining good weight on the amount he was eating, then I would know that trying to feed more would be overfeeding. If he was not eating enough to maintain good weight and body condition, my next stop would be the vet.

Either the fast itself, or more likely the hair and grass that he will sneak past me to eat wrecks his stomach. Sometimes I forget to thaw something, and a few times he just wasn't hungry. I don't see anything wrong with it, just doesn't work for this particular dog.
