Hello, I am having an issue with one of my department K9s, and thought I would look for advice on the forums.
Kuda is a 4 year old GSD, and has been working the street for 2.5 years. Lately, during training, he has been moving around on the sleeve. I have tried the bungee cord training with him, and for some reason, he is passing out when he is on the bungee and it is being stretched out. He is on a harness. I dont know if he is holding his breath, or what is going on.
Last week during biulding search traning, he located the decoy, and bit the sleeve. The decoy was working him, and all of the sudden Kuda released the sleeve, and tried to go under it, and bite the decoy. Fortunately, the decoy was able to fend him off until the handler got control of him.
I dont know what has provoked this behavior, but now I need help fixing it. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I think first thing needs to be a trip to the vets office. I've never heard of a dog passing out from bitework on a harness. Combine that with the odd behavior on the building search I'd take him out of service till you rule out a physical problem.
Sean I agree with Matthew regarding the trip to the vet. If Kuda is fainting(medical term is syncope)while on a harness it sounds like he may have a severe respiratory illness or cardiovascular disease. As far as Kuda moving around the sleeve, this sounds to be an avoidance issue. Did Kuda faint at any time while on the sleeve? If so he may be associating the negative experience of passing out while on the sleeve but he does not have the negative association with the bite suit. I strongly recommend video taping the fainting for your vet to view so they can have a clear understanding. Good luck
