Find a new class - that's an idiotic exercise for a dog that young, and a sure sign that the instructor doesn't know what he/she is doing.

I agree. When I started with a long down with Isis. I did it in little increments, with treats and my voice praising her. I only added longer bits of time as she became comfortable with what we were currently doing. I always used a long line and it was never forced. We didn't even start this until her attention span was much longer. Find a trainer that knows what's what. You never want to force a puppy. As my husband says, puppies should be taught using play training, making it fun.

Thanks for the feedback, I actually got in a discussion with the school, I am not doing the 30 mn down this school is based on the volhard philosophy that the first lesson you do not use food you have to handle the dog in sitting him down and making him stand up (Dack already does all of this)
I was told they used this method on 8 weeks old not for me.

I started out with my dog using some of the Volhard methods for basic puppy training. I started the 30 minute down at 1 min. and added time gradually releasing with praise and a treat.
I now have a nice place command in the house and a reliable long-down on the field.
I don't see the negative associated with it, but to each his own. Maybe a puppy agility class is more what your looking to do with your pup?
Katie
I use "relax" as my place command and "platz" on the field.

Edit reason: distinguish commands

But .... at eleven weeks (eight weeks, per the O.P.'s trainer)?

I must be behind the times.
At eight weeks, eleven weeks, sixteen weeks, twenty plus weeks, it's still all play for me and my pups.
So this Volhard, is it like compulsion or aversion training?
Let me know how it works out.

You've got a point, Connie -- my dog was probably 16-18 weeks when I started.
But, I think throwing this trainer out the window completely for using the Volhard method is a little harsh IMHO.
Of course, Leerburg's "Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months" DVD is the "do it yourself at home" alternative.

I understand what you mean, but I think it's throwing out this trainer more than throwing out Volhard's methods.
I would not be comfortable with 30-minute downs at eight weeks, and I would probably therefore not be comfortable with the trainer advocating it.
