Hello All - I am seeking help with my German Shepard. We had him since a pup and had the castration done around 6 months. He is 2 years old and about 130 pounds.I have no problems with him at all but he has bitten my wife or went after her intensly and he has gone after my gransons also. I have purchased an electric collar and a prong collar,we feed him raw meat.I love him dearly but I don't want him to hurt anyone unless I command it for protection. I believe all animals are good and that the owner has made a mistake with that said what can I do to eliminate / prevent from going after family ? I think my issue may be pack /hierarchy in nature but I am not the guru ?
If he is dominant, then your family may be infracting on his "rules" and he is going to punish them for it.
It is common for dogs to see males as more dominant than females and children. Men are naturally more commanding than women and also physically larger. Your dog probably sees you as higher ranking than him, but the rest of the family is lower.
Put the dog on a diet (He is probably about 40 lbs overweight if he is a standard sized Shepherd). I hope you are feeding bones and organs and not just muscle meat, give him exercise, obedience train him and get Ed's Pack Structure DVD. "Establishing Pack Structure with the Family Pet" - it is very worthwhile.
This is not a dog that should be trained in protection.
Until the dog is receiving adequate physical exercise, and mental stimulation, it's impossible to pinpoint whether there are other behavioral issues afoot.
The dog is over two?
He can easily be running 5 miles a day, with 2-3 20 minut training sessions a day.
Once that's in place, you may see the behavioral problems resolve themselves.
If not, THEN you can more accurately determine the cause, because a sedentary lifestyle has been ruled out.
Until the dog is receiving adequate physical exercise, and mental stimulation, it's impossible to pinpoint whether there are other behavioral issues afoot.
What ever Alyssa says, goes. Obviously, until you get the dog exercising and tired, don't put him in a position where your wife or grandchild or anyone is at risk.
In addition to stimulating exercise, you will also benefit from setting pack structure into place. This will help this guy both understand his place in your family, and keep your family safe from him while you work on fixing these issues ...
