Hello,
I am actually planing on getting a small-med size dog soon.
Something between 10-35 lbs. I want a dog with very high prey drive. I am currently looking for a dog in local shelters but I dont know what breeds or mixes I should be looking for.The dog will be a family pet but I prefere the crazy active dogs who go mad for a ball. Does anybody know of any breeds in that size category that usually have very high prey drive?
What you are looking for is what a lot of people turn in to shelters. They wanted a "Frasier" dog, and got a never-ending bundle of energy that they can't handle.
I hope you find one. Thanks for looking in the shelters.
I vote a JRT.
I've owned half a dozen different terrier breeds in my few yrs on the planet and only had one (Norwich) that wasn't ball crazy....till I tossed a ball for my brother's Bull Terrier. That short legged little bassid Norwich never let another dog pass him going after a ball from then on. If he couldn't outrun them he'd try and eat them.
There are some wack jobs out there that are crossing JRTs with Border Collies for their height dog in flyball. Talk about the ultimate OCD/ADHD dog.
If your going to a shelter then just take a ball with you and bounce it down the isle. You'll soon see the crazy ones.
also ask the attendants there. They should know which is which.
I'm certain Neb's poppa (deadbeat dad....i kid!) was a JRT. Great little guy, lots of drive, and a husky stuck in a JRT body for ages.
So you might look at mixes from rescues/shelters depending on the mix. But I'll add a vote for JRTs/JRT mixes (and Husky mixes of course).
Neb has made me realize how cool smaller dogs can be. I love the GSDs of course, but having a Midget (OK, he grew) - size of body has nothing to do with size of heart or drive!
I agree. I have 3 terrior mixes, and I admit they were not my first choice for a dog. I wanted a puppy and a purebred dog. However, my husband saw each one of these and fell in love. I have been very blessed with their crazy personalities.
They all have a very high prey drive. I have a flirt pole my husband made for them from the end of a fishing pole, a strong piece of rope and a pitifully mauled stuffed bunny tied to the end of it. I jerk and pull it and make it hop away from them and they each go crazy.
They have great personalities, even though 2 or them were about one year old when I got them, they have adjusted well. The Jack Russel mix I got at 12 weeks. He is a dream boat, but a total maniac! All are smart, very smart!
Have a blast getting your new pup!
