When my GSD is out in the fenced-in meadow and I call him to come inside, he will run down to the other end of the meadow and bark at the horses, then run back and come in. Any other time or place, he will come immediately. Any suggestions?
It worked really well, but if your dog is responding to something that is too far away for you to maintain control of him for the purpose of proofing him after he's been taught the command, then you make have to do this differently. For example, your situation might require an e-collar.
Of course, this will be easier if he responds to the command in other environments, which may mean that you just need to teach him that you and your wishes are MUCH more important than barking at horses.
My posts reflect my own opinions, and not those of the Marine Corps or the United States.
Thanks. I tried an e-collar on him about a year ago for another problem. He would freeze, and then go on doing what he was originally doing. Maybe I will give it another try with this problem. I don't know, he seems to look pleased with himself afterwards - like he chased the horses for me!
I'll do that. I have used the e-collar on other dogs in the past with great success. This dog is just different. He looks to the ground to what where "it" is coming from.
Ann if your dog “froze” as you wrote earlier, or “looks to the ground” when you press the button, there’s a big problem. He doesn’t understand where the stimulation is coming from, and MOST IMPORTANTLY he doesn’t know how to make it stop. All you’re doing is using the Ecollar as a “HEY” tool, to get your dog’s attention. It allows for far more information filled communication than just that.
I’d post my method for teaching the recall but it’s too large for this Forum. I’d suggest that you join the Ecollar_Plus list at
I’d suggest you read Konrad Most’s “ Special Instructions on the Recall” before using the e-collar. This is another example of why knowledge and timing are so important with e-collar training.
“He would freeze, and then go on doing what he was originally doing. Maybe I will give it another try with this problem. I don't know, he seems to look pleased with himself afterwards - like he chased the horses for me!’ “He looks to the ground to what where "it" is coming from.”
Thank you Mr. Castle. Actually, I had a professional trainer handle this (ecollar). His remarks were "you just can't use the ecollar on some dogs," as my rottie would run back to me and sit by my side when given the correction with the ecollar - but the shepherd didn't. I am checking out your link now.
