My dogs name is 'Austin' ( after Stone Cold Steve Austin - WWE )pretty daggy I know ! I am new to dog training and love it, and i'm always learning new things. It has been confusing though because where i'm from ( near Syd. Aus. ) dog trainers hear WONT EVEN USE a choke chain, they say its cruel, they use things like 'Halti's' etc. What a load of garbage, can you believe it!. Its ok though I eventually found a 'proper trainer'thank god- (trains police k9) and we are now going very well- BUT.
I learnt yesterday my dog is training me! I come home open the back door, Austins runs off gets his toy and brings it to me so I can throw it for him, again and again you get the picture? when he barks at night what do I do? I go to him, dont I, like the perfectly trained dog owner I am. Its funny isn't it.When he is off lead and I call him, he wont come every time, but if he brings his toy to me, I throw it - every - single - time, for my dog has trained me perfectly.Who knows maybe I will be sleeping outside next week !
Its great isnt it ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> its hard to break the habbits we tend to do when we get a dog . like when i got my puppy they are so cute and cuddly u just want to hold them all the time nd if the whine u have to buy them a diamond ring to get them to be quiet. but i was wrong and i found this out. in order to stop this change it up a bit when he brings his toy to u u have 2 options one ognor the dog and YOU WIN! ,or the method i like is to beat the dog at his own game . obivilously this dog want you to play with him with the toy,so take it make the pup sit stay roll over and go though acouple commands then toss the toy .
this put you in control over the moment and teaches the dog that in order to get u to do what he wants he must do what you want!and remember to change the order that sit, stay ,down ,and so on ,comes in.
remember dog training classes are not for the dog but for the handler
The more people that I meet, The more I like my dogs
(Trey Denney)
Trey, You are absolutely right. The rule of thumb is "you give me what I want, I give u what you want" So get your dog to down before tossing the toy is a good trade off.
Looks like you have a great trainable dog there. In our sessions we always strived for the dog to drive us.
Just want to clarify the usage of choke chain or pinch collar. Use only when the dog already knows the command and chose to ignore it. Not under any circumstances should we use the choke to teach a new command. What I usually sees many so-called trainers yank the leash at every new command. This is shit training and will ruin the dog.
Coming back to "my dog is training me" this is most correct if you approach dog training the correct way.

When the dog is confused, blame not the dog but shoot the handler.
