Mike Landrum Webboard User Reg: 08-20-2009 Posts: 2 Loc: Offline	I am a police officer and have been for in excess of 2oyrs. I have spent the last 5 years working as a school resource officer in our school system. Tomorrow I take ownership of a dog that is going to be working in the school system as my partner strictly working drugs and contraband. We will go through a k-9 handler school in a couple of weeks. My question is on the first day tomorrow how should I begin this relationship off on the right foot. It is a two year old male Golden Retriever. I need some basic ideas to get things started in the right direction. Help if you can please.

I'm not a K9 officer, just a fat guy with some dogs, Howard can add more. I got Roxie, a schutzhund dog, when she was about four. in about a week she figured I was the funnest person around and then we went to "work"

Outside the house on walks, etc mark eye contact with a verbal "yes" or a click followed by a food reward. Start recalls in a fenced in baseball field with a tennis ball, food reward and a long line. My dogs love the chuckit ball you can buy at pet stores -- same size as a tennis ball and won't hurt their teeth. A retriever should chase and return a ball like that until you are sick of throwing them. My mutt which is 1/2 retriever will chase and return for hours if I'd last that long. An Irish Setter kind of guy.
