I have a boxer/english bulldog mix. He is very friendly to dogs and people. My problem with him is that he gets really excited when he meets people. He is hard to control when he around people. Even if he see's someone from faraway his rear starts to wiggle fast and he starts to pull hard on the leash to get to them. If he is close enough he will jump on strangers.
For example, toady I was walking him and a neighbor wanted to speak to me. While I am talking he was continuously jumping on her,I wanted to snap his prong collar hard to get him to calm down since nothing else was working but I'm wondering would that have been too hard a correction for that behavior?
Any advice how to handle this?
He is obedient any other time, I just have a hard time controlling him when he is around anyone other than me or my son.
I'm not a professional, but it sounds like you need to desensitize him to other people. This means starting with people he is familiar with at first. One person first and then once he is behaving correctly add two. Then move into larger groups, strangers etc.
The people participating must know how to handle him also. They should not give him any attention until he is sitting/ down etc- Whatever you decide is the "correct" behavior in your situation.
Also, I'd suggest getting Ed's first couple of training DVD's. They are very good resources.
There are three constants in life: Death, taxes and the love of a dog.
(I would not give the dog a prong correction for being overly friendly, especially when he doesn't really know yet what is expected of him when he meets new people)
