Hello all.
Looking for some feedback and recommendations for vacuum cleaners that are powerful enough to suck up all the dog hair that I deal with daily with my two GSD's. I also need one that has the filter system for dander and etc. Since I have both wood and carpet, a vacuum that can be used on both surfaces would be great.
Ive looked online and am just overwhelmed with the many different choices and the widde range of costs.
Do you think that you get what you pay for with vacuums and that I should expect to pay 500 + for a good quality vacuum that will handle all the dog hair my pets shed?

I have an Oreck XL and I like it. I used to have both carpet and laminate floors and when I went on the laminate, my old vaccum would kick a lot of stuff around..I got an Oreck and it goes nicely from carpet to smooth floor with no problems and you don't have to change any settings. We bought a house last year and put in hardwood floors thru the entire thing so thats all I have now. The oreck is still working very nicely for me, Ive had it for 2 years now. I paid around $200 for it.
My dog sheds like crazy all year long and the hair drives me nuts. I vacuum once a day and also got myself a roomba that has a schedule mode on it. It can get under the coffee tables and behind furniture. The roomba makes its rounds every day at 11am, it is a great in betweener...can't use it solely because it would overfill with hair. I did pay over $400 for it a year ago and it's definitely not as good as it was when I first got it. When it dies Ill buy a cheaper version without the schdeuler.

My mom has a Kirby that is just AMAZING. It works on carpets, flooring, furniture...everything. I've borrowed it periodically because it has attachments to use it as a carpet-shampooer and am quite impressed with it all the way around.
(I personally own a Bissel "helix" which is great for an apartment with a short-coated dog, but I suspect not so much for two GSD's)

Hi Lois,
I also have the top of the line Oreck, and love it. Mostly because it has the Hepa filter and all the stuff is completely contained inside the bag, and doesn't escape when changing the bag.
I do believe that you get what you pay for. Years ago, I had a Eureka, and paid $250 and it fell apart in two years. That is when I bought the Oreck and while it was expensive, they have a cool yearly (free) check up that comes with it. I just bring it in for service and they clean it up, and make sure it is in top working order, and if anything needs replacing they replace it then.
Included in the price, I also was given a small canister vacuum that works great because it has the hose attachments and can work just about anywhere you could need it to.
I also have 2 GSD's, and can relate to the copious amounts of fur they shed. I have been very happy with my Oreck and have had it for over 10 years and it still works as good as it did the day I bought it.
Good luck deciding!

I have a Dyson, and I loved it at first. The attachments are awesome and I've never had a vacuum that worked this well on dog hair. It worked great when I first got it, but after a year I wanted to throw the thing out. No matter how often I washed the removable, washable, HEPA filter, the vacuum slowly lost suction over time to the point where it wouldn't pick up a darn thing. I took the darn HEPA filter out and voila - it was back to working great again. I had to get a new filter, despite Dyson's claims that the filter can simply be regularly rinsed out to remove the dirt and restore full function. So, if you buy a Dyson and it gets loads of use as mine does with 6 dogs and a kid, you might have to occasionally get a new filter.
Overall, I think the Dyson was worth the $. I've had mine for 5 years now and despite the above hiccup, it still works great.

Dyson all the way!
Take it from someone who has gone through three vacuums in 3 years, all ranging in price from $250-$450.
I have a 3 year old son, 4 dogs( Two huskies, a cocker mix and a Leonberger. Not to mention the puppy sitting we do for friends going out of town.), 3 cats (2 long hair and one white short hair) and 2 very messy guinea pigs. Since I started using this vacuum, the hair that seemed to endlessly accumulate has gone down AT LEAST 50%.
I have the yellow Dyson Ball. With the click of a button you can go from carpets to hardwood. If you run across some DRIED muddy footprints, just turn the power head back on and Voila, the footprints are gone.
I do agree with Konnie though about the filter. My Dyson is new, but with the heavy traffic that it has to clean up after I can for see having to change the filters rather than just rinsing them out. I really don't mind the cost of the filter because for a vacuum to be able to keep up with my household is a really awesome thing for me.

I use a rainbow. No filters, gathers hair like a magnet, and easy to unclog or replace parts on.
The downside is they are expensive brand new. Our current model (we've had 4) was a used we picked up for $200.00. A new one I know can run over $1000.
It is the only vac I can use with my allergies because no dander, dustmite, or spores can pass through the water.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback everyone! I have been taking your suggestions and looking on ebay and craigslist to see if I can find one a bit more affordable.
I know I have to make a purchase soon. Its been three days since my hoover died on me and my house is literally covered with hair!
