Ok, I will be ready for a new puppy this fall and am really having a hard time figuring out what I want and where to get it. I would like to do obedience and/or pp or sar (mostly just want something that doesn't lick every stranger to death.) I like to look of a LARGE bully type (dogo, APBT, presa, etc.) but want the working ability of the GSD. So, I know this is a little long winded but any advice or reccomendation is appreciated. Also, I have a GSD, doberman mix that is huge and don't really like smaller dogs.
Thanks!

This isn't long winded, this is by far too short.
None of us can pick your dog for you. It's up to you to research. It's up to you to connect to a breeder, a club to help you with your goals, and pick a dog that is compatible with your life. For any of us to blindly suggest a dog breed with such little information would be silly.
I can't think of a dog that shouldn't involve obedience at least at some level. What level exactly are you after? How much dog are you prepared to deal with? What are your expectations of the work level and living environment with this dog? How is your knowledge level, and why aren't you working with the GSD that you have?
BTW a APBT doesn't tend to be what most would consider a large dog.

If you really want to work SAR, chose the dog for the task. Far too many folks get a dog then decide they want to work SAR.

Ok, I was really tired and frustrated when I first wrote this post, and I apologize for the lack of focus. I am working with my gsd, but he has taken more to my husband and will be his "farm dog." I am really asking for a someone to point me to a breeder that has true working dogs, something other than GSD and Mals, and is in the United States.
I have done a lot of research, and come up with a lot of breeders with claims, but no proof of what their dogs can do. Example: Boerboel breeder that claimed personal protection dogs but didn't actually have his stock trained and had only sold pups for the purpose with no follow-up.

What is going to be your first focus with this dog? I would focus in on that, find people who train it, and get to know them and their dogs and see about finding a dog that way. For instance, visit a couple of PP trainers, get to know them, who you like as a trainer, see some dogs worked and get to know what you like/what lines you like, and then look within those lines.
That would be what I would do.

Ok, I am going to try and clarify this a bit further, I am looking for breeder recommendations for a large breed dog capable of personal protection, other than a gsd or mal.

You need to narrow down the breed and what your expectations are. Are you talking competition worthy, a dog who is simply able to do this work, or are you just looking for something to trot out that isn't a Mal or a GSD.
IMO that isn't a good reason to aquire a dog because it's not a mal or a GSD. The odds of you ending up with something that doesn't work well in the other aspects of your life is pretty high when you aquire a dog for what it's NOT rather than what it IS.

Ms. Alexander,
Ya'know, if you go on line, and search for a personal protection dog list or large breed dog, or both, you'll get all kinds of information abour all kinds of dogs suitable as big and for personal protection.
No matter how many times you clarify your request "Will someone please tell me what I want!?!?!?" it is still a bit unusual.
I, for one, have zero clue what kind of dog you want, other than not a Malinois or GSD.
I commend your persistence.
I might observe that any number of dogs are capable of personal protection, but it is no accident GSDs, Mals, and other commonly associated breeds are most often trained for the work.
Good luck.

What a great statement!
