I have a 9 month old black lab. I need some advice on how to keep him from digging. It's not out of control, but it seems to happen once or twice a week. He get's plenty of attention and I have put his fecies in the holes that he digs, which seems to work for that hole, but he moves onto digging others.
Any advice? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I know this is not what you want to hear, but... Dogs dig!
My stupid male was digging up the driveway on my trip to the mailbox this morning. They smell something interesting and dig. I only wish I could smell what they smell!!
Either keep him in an area that is 'dig proof' (concrete or patio blocks) or don't let him out of your site. With my dogs a 'leave it' command or just plain old 'pfui' works fine. But, again, you have to see them doing it... not after the fact.
Just like mouthing. Sometimes its easier to redirect the energy than to nix the action.
If he loves to dig, then give him a place to dig .. try getting some wood and section a part of the yard .. encourage him by burying his toys (partially sticking out a bit at first).
After a while, he should get used to digging in one place. You might consider correcting him if he digs elsewhere. But first, you'd have to be sure he understands "No" or "Phooie". Then take him to his digging spot. The poop idea (as you know) works. Just don't put any in his special digging area. He'll get the idea sooner or later. If you bury cool stuff, you'll almost WANT him to try to dig it up.
The only annoying part is that you will STILL have to keep re-filling his area. Otherwise it looks terrible over time. But at least you don't hurt yourself tripping on holes. Isn't it horrible when it rains and they all fill up!? If you've ever stepped in a wet, muddy hole, you know that I mean!
Thanks for the advice. I do have the ability to put him in a kennel while I'm away. I have let him roam in the yard with our other Lab so they can play, but it might be time to get him used to his kennel, or try and bury some toys so he at least digs in one area...
