I went back to Hambone's trainer (last year I needed help w/ Hambone's aggression towards dogs) to see if he could help me with Lucy's nipping. I wanted him to watch my marker training and see if he could find a different approach I hadn't thought of.
In Hambone's training, we didn't get to corrections until we knew Hambone knew the commands and failed to follow them. We used luring and markers and rewards and he really improved!
Well, I got there and watched a session. No markers and rewards. Sheer compulsion. One dog was never trained, and was given to the man's daughter to walk. She walked the dog, yanked it back in line when it got out of position and forced it into a sit and would yank it when it didn't stay in the sit. Hambone's trainer approved!!!!
I knew this guy was big Milan fan, but he had always chosen training before correction. He apparently has changed his technique.
Lucy will not be attending classes.
The horror of it all is I could just see myself years ago in that girl...I am so ashamed of myself, but soooo glad I discovered Leerburg and marker training, and the book,"The Thinking Dog".
Good for you, Jo. So many people would take the other path, of listening to the supposed "authority." I just don't get people like this calling themselves trainers.
