Hey everyone,
Enoch is a year and a half and he is about to embark on his first move. I just wanted to know what things I need to do to make this move as smooth as possible for him. Also he is house trained but what are some of the things I need to do the first day and first week in the new place. Do I have to retrain him? Any suggestions for those of you who have moved with your dog would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Wow, Maisha -- a whole year and a half have gone by since you got Enoch! Time flies!
I kind of liken moving to traveling with you dog. When I travel with Ellie I try to keep feeding and potty times the same and always provide her with a "place" to relax/sleep which could be her crate or a familiar fuzzy mat.
In short, I'd suggest you keep the "routine" as consistent as you can regardless of the new setting.

We did the same thing with Conan. We just moved and kept everything else the same. He's been in three different places and he's two years old. He's never seemed to care. It was just the same old stuff in a new place!
PS. We're kinda close to each other! I'm in Orange County but have plenty of family out where you are.

Yes I can't believe time has flown by. He's a great dog and it's due to everyone who walked me through his puppyhood. We have a crate so that will be his safe place. Now in terms of houstraining I plan on taking him outside to potty when we first bring him to the new house. Now he goes to the backdoor and waits for someone to let him out or barks by the door if no one notices him. Do I take him out myself for a week or two so he'll know in the new house where the door is for him to go out? I think overall he'll be fine. He adapts pretty easily to new situations.
PS

I'm sure that he'll be fine with just a quick housebreaking review. I used to live out in Barstow.

Hey everyone,
Enoch is a year and a half and he is about to embark on his first move. I just wanted to know what things I need to do to make this move as smooth as possible for him....
Here are some suggestions:
Make sure that you have new tags ready to slip onto his collar that day, with your cell number or new landline number.
Assign someone the job all that day of keeping track of the dog and his food, water, and potty needs. Primarily, the dog needs to be contained so there is no slipping out to explore or, even worse, try to go "home."
Stick to his schedules.
Have his bed in a location kinda like the old one.
Take the dog on a walk around the neighborhood of the new house before entering it and give him a mental map of its location.
Show him the new potty place, using whatever your potty word it.
Is it a local move? Can you take him to see the house in advance?
If there will be a new vet, have a copy of his records from the old one.

Thanks for the suggestions Connie.
It is a local move so we will take him to see the house first. The first day I bring him to the house after I take him outside should I allow him to explore the house or put him in his crate immediately after coming in from outside?
His crate/bed will pretty much be in the same place in the new house.
P.S.
I am obviously mistaken Elaine. Allow me to send you a big hello.
