I have reintroduced a crate into my dog's life after 7 years without. We have been proceeding slowly since I don't want to make it a negative thing and he is a little miffed about having his space controlled.
The past couple of days he has had free access in and out but today I have moved into locked doors. I ran him until he dropped this morning so he would be good and tired. He is hilarious. He is not fighting or complaining but he won't let himself sleep. His head is literally bobbing with his eyes closing but as his head drops to his paws he snaps it back up to attention.
It does make one wonder what is going through their heads.
Just wait him out. A lot of times when a dog has been given the option of uncontrolled freedom, they will put up a little fight when the reigns get pulled back in.
I like the getting him tired part and the not making it a negative thing. So as long as he is quiet, wait him out. If you want, you can give him a kong stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter, then freeze it. Only let him have that awesome treat when he goes in the crate and he will soon run to the crate so that he can earn that treat.
