Max sleeps on a mat/bed in our room at night and the majority of the time he is great, just goes right to his bed and goes to sleep.
Recently he's been jumping off his bed like something has touched him or bitten him. After that he will try to lie back down and then jump off it again and after that he's too scared to even walk on it.
It's not conisistent, sometimes he will go a week or more not wanting to touch it. Sometimes it will only be a day before he goes back to normal and sleeps on it with no problem.
Whatever is happening to him doesn't make him permanently scared of it, thank goodness. But I can never see or feel anything on it after he jumps off it. I treated him for fleas thinking maybe that was what was bothering him, but it hasn't helped.
Has anyone else had this kind of thing happen before? Could fleas be the problem and I need to treat his bed and not just him? I haven't seen any fleas. How do I determine the problem when I can't see or feel anything?

Yeah it's a mat. I don't think it's meant to be put in the washing machine because the stuffing would get all pulled apart and go lumpy. But I could possibly hand wash it.
We have 2 mats and even exchanging them doesn't seem to help him. Could it be in his head? I've seen him jump up from a deep sleep convinced there is something at the door when there isn't. So could he be dreaming it and then just keeps believing something is there when it's not?

Is the first startled jump-up always from sleeping? Never from just lying there? Do you know? Have you tried using one in the living room or elsewhere to see if it's a sleeping phenomenon only ?

Sometimes it's definitly not when he's asleep, it could be anytime after lying down, sometimes it's straight away. He is approx 2.5 years old.
He lies on one in the living room while we eat dinner and he's never had any problem in there, only in our room. And sometimes putting a towel on top will help. But last night nothing helped.
I haven't checked him over for fleas, but will when I get home. What is the 'flea evidence' to look for?
