Okay! The chicken is in my freezer! I got a whole chicken, 8 piece cut with the back.
Now, I'm going to ask some stupid questions. I became vegetarian at 13 years old, so I have not the slightest idea how to prepare meat, aside from the food safety part. She (15 yo, 21lb, Cocker Spaniel) eats 1 cup of THK right now with salmon oil and vitamin e. I've been considering upping it to 1 1/2 cups because she could probably use some added weight. She doesn't look thin but behind her curly hair she's a little bonier than I'd like her to be.
So, how much should I give her the first time? With how much THK? The whole chicken is 3.54 lbs, if that makes a difference. I remember to take the fat and skin off. I need directions! I'm sorry I'm meat inept!
eta I do not have a scale. Should I get one before I add the chicken? It should last in the freezer, yes?

How much does the back weigh? Can you tell by eyeballing it compared to the rest?
(By the way, when I mentioned a whole chicken, I mean with the rest being for humans and the back being your test for this senior dog. I didn't know that you were a vegetarian.)

Sounds good! I didn't realize the different parts were all so... different haha. I'm excited to give it to her, I think she'll be thrilled!
Backs are nice soft cartilage-y bones, and also a nice meat-bone ratio. So if you peel off the skin and blobs of fat, it's the ideal beginner RMB, IMO. Also, the soft bones are great to get those bone-digesting enzymes to kick in. Remember that for 15 years, she (or her pancreas) has not needed to produce them.
