Marker training in the livingroom. It's so damn cold here (yeah, I know, I'm a weenie) that we gave this a shot. The last 2 minutes are me trying to teach her to back up, and unfortunately it's mostly shots of my butt.
I will try to do it again at a better angle to get some tips. I don't think I'm approaching it the right way...

Fun video! I've been thinking of doing something like that...it would be nice to see what I look like when I'm training. I'd like to see what more experienced people have to say about teaching her to back up.
Btw, I love Chula's looks!

Are there birds in the room? I hate to sound so dumb , but I can't make out where the noise is coming from.

Yes, it's the birds. The clicks and cheeps are my 2 budgies...
I can see that either my timing is off on giving the mark, or the audio sync is off (or maybe a little of both)

Oh, OK. I was thinking there was a clicker in the room being activated by someone other than you.
Check out this trainer: http://www.ehow.com/video_4942993_train-dog-back-up-body.html
Not that the way she is doing it is unusual, but that she does what I (and maybe most folks) do, by creating a slot first (a "channel," she says). You could be between a bed and a wall, or lots of indoor spaces that would be the equivalent of the one she's using.
Also, see how the dog is straight first? That's a good thing because backing up will be crooked if the dog starts crooked. (So you see two straightness things: the slot and the beginning position.)
I'm sure many others have taught this too, and probably have better suggestions.
On the backup command,

I don't want my dog to back up....ever....
I feel your pain about the cold, last year I used my garage as a training area but because of the weather I have to put my van in there. If you can get away with it I'd empty out a room just for training, love your floor.

I taught mine to back up between the couch and the coffee table because that was the spot that trying to turn around caused the most problems anyway.

I swear sometimes they circle the darn table like sharks, it drives me crazy!!
Nico likes to sleep there under our feet and she is much much too big to turn around in that area. It only took about 6 knocked over drinks for me to figure out that I needed to teach her to back up and that was the most logical area to teach it.
We have a small house and big dogs, so backing up is taught right after sit and down.

How did I learn about accidental pattern training?
I was in the habit of getting cut-up fruit from the kitchen and sitting on the couch that faces the coffee table to eat it, then letting the dogs move towards me from their trained distance from me eating and do standard doggy pushups for small pieces of remaining apple or tangerine. To tell them they could move close now, I'd say "fruit!"
One day I headed for the kitchen saying "I want some fruit" (I thought to myself) and looked back at this sudden eruption of activity behind me. They were racing around the coffee table to get into position, exactly like the 3 Stooges or Keystone Kops, including smacking into each other at the corner of the table, bouncing off, re-circling....
So I know what you mean.
Don't know why I didn't recognize that natural channel, though, for teaching backup!
