Hi Everyone,
I am considering placing my 6 month old GSD in a board and train program for 5-10 days. Aside from the result end of the idea, I wanted to get some thoughts on my dog returning to me from being trained by someone else. Anyone have experience with the switch and how smoothly that goes? Thanks, Vanessa

5-10 days? What are you hoping to gain out of it?

I have been working with my dog via puppy K and basic obedience. He is coming along nicely and I was hoping that some of our work could get "firmed up" while he stays at this particular board and train. Mostly I am looking for consistent sit, stay, come, etc. basics. He is a home companion dog.
Are you thinking 5-10 days is not worth it?
Thanks,
Vanessa

Just be sure and not let them give you the snake oil salesman talk...check references. I left my dog at one for a week. The day before I was supposed to pick him up they called me and told me he was baring his teeth at people and they needed to keep him another week. Stupid me fell for it and left him another week. $800 later, the dog came home with all of his ribs showing, jumping up on me, counter surfing and whining/barking in his crate....and he did NONE of that before he went there! He was taught absolutely nothing and gained some bad habits that I had to fix on my own. These people have ads on the radio and have pictures of all the police k9s they have trained and seemed 100% legit.
On the other hand, I have seen other board/train situations that turned out wonderful. You just have to know what your goals are and check, check, re-check references.
Good Luck

Thanks Angie,
I have been checking references for this place and I am visiting next week. I found them through the IACP. They have a good rep and work with our county K-9. They are pretty up-front about their methods (they use an e-collar) and they also require that a dog has gone through basic obedience. I am nervous for the reasons you mentioned...I don't want to freak my dog out and I know that even with all the DVD's and books I've tuned into I am still not a professional.

Vanessa, I would be very cautious with leaving a 6 month old pup in a board and train facility. I have no experince with this type of facility, but the thought of what might happen to a 6 month old pup in the wrong hands would keep me from doing it. And even if the facility is a great one, you will be a big part of the equation when it comes to continuing the training of your puppy.
Are you having specific problems with his training? For the same money, could you hire a trainer to work with you and your dog together?

Hi Lynne and thanks for your response. I am concerned/intrigued also and that's why I wanted to get some opinions.
As for my dog's training, it's coming, but he can get very bitey and often barks at me when he doesn't want to do what I command. He can get really over-bearing. I have two small kids and I try to keep them separate until he is trained well, but I can't even leave them with him for one minute in the kitchen without worry that he might play too rough (or vise-versa) or get unruly and snap at them.
I prepared so much for my dog's arrival and training. It's so much harder than it looks! He's really a fantastic boy. He just needs to "get it".

If he's snapping at your kids, you need to keep them separated all the time, IMO.
At 6 months old, he's still a pup, even though he's big. Do you keep a drag line on him in the house? It's much easier to redirect or correct for bad manners with drag line on him. Have you read the free ebooks here or purchased any of the DVD's on pack structure?
What kind of training are you doing with him so far?
What's his exercise schedule like?
Have you considered a trainer who can come to the house to see you and the dog together?

Dennis and Lynne are giving you great advice.
How would you ever know if/when you can trust him around the kids unless you do the training? Personally, I don't think it's fair to set kids and puppies up for failure and it's best to always supervise.
