have an 11 week old pitbull, the largest and healthiest male of a litter of 12. He is on a high-quality diet and is growing very quickly (from 8-11 weeks he went from 8.5 lbs to approx 25 lbs.) He is developing some dominance traits (started at 8 weeks). He is also basically a one-person puppy.

The problem is behavioural. Most puppies are easily 'timed' as to when they need to go outside (i.e. within twenty minutes or so after eating, two minutes after sleeping....he is much more spontaneous and unpredictable. If he visits the bathroom with me, he then uses the bathroom floor for a couple days. (He wants to do what he sees me do.) Otherwise, he pees or poops on the floor somewhere else, knowing that if I see him, he will get to go outside. He does this especially if we have been outside and he does not want to come in. (i.e. he may have been outside for a considerable amount of time, but still must pee on the floor soon after.)
I praise him for good behaviour, and use NO! when he uses the floor as a potty.

Is he still too young to expect any better potty habits and behaviour?

Otherwise, his behaviour is aggressively-normal... play&prey.

You need to look up the articles here about crate training, the dog will not like it after he's been accustomed to your presence for awhile but it'll help.

Also I'd take him out 1 time every hour and give him the command while he does it in a praising manner, he will pick up this eventually. Around eight o'clock or so take away his water so he won't go at night. Main thing though go the article section on crate training. There's extensive info on that here.

Could not agree more. Crate training is the number 1 most valuable pottie trainng aid there is...I taught my dog through this method and he was good to go in about a month... my Grandma's dog is almot a year now and still goes in the house... I TRIED to tell her... but nooooooooo he would not like the crate, I can't do that! He will Cry! *shaking head* I just wear my rubber boots over at her house now.

A bit of advise and trick I have always used, it takes some time from you but only 3 days(The average)
I put the pup in the crate when unattended and set a 2 hour schedule every time out the same door, I did this even through the night, I Know your all probably Laughing LOL <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> But it really worked, I also learned to read the pup, after eating out the door, after waking up (if not in the crate out the door)I know this seems like a lot but it works great!

Crate, crate, crate. Do not feed pupster *anyplace* but the crate. This includes dog treats, toss them in the crate. What does pupster learn? The crate is the place where the food comes! It's a good thing. Get earplugs for the 1st couple of nites till he figures out that carrying on causes nothing to happen.

All the advice you received is good. I would also suggest you get Ed's video "your puppy 8 weeks to 8 months". You'll get a lot of great info on there.

Sometimes if I have a whiney pup I'll put the crate out on the back porch at night. Pup can bark and cry all he wants and it doesn't interfere with sleeping family members. Just don't forget to take up their water around 7-8PM. Take them outside before bedtime and again EARLY in the morning. Don't make a 8-16 week old pup wait till 9AM before relieving himself or he'll make a mess in the crate.

A safe rule of thumb is take the months and add an hour. For your 12 week old that would be four hours. During the day. Possibly six at night. I would let him out in the middle of the night until 14-16 weeks. Then out at 10:30-11 should be able to go until 6.

I have heard that before... every month add an hour. But my dog went the full 8 the first night I got him home and every night after that. I never did have the "get up every hour" thing to deal with. I figured I would try it and see what happend... glad I did, saved me many waking hours.

The problem with 'trying it' to see what happens. Is if the dog doesn't make it...now you have a problem the pup now realizes it CAN go in its crate.

Some dogs can make it, the problem is you never know ahead of time if you have one that can or not.
