We have an 8' x 8' area on the side of the house that we made into Kasey's bathroom. It's dirt with that black landscaping plastic (the thin kind with holes for drainage), and then covered with smooth pea gravel.
When it gets warm outside the ground and the gravel heat up and then the smell of urine starts to waft into the house through open windows. It's not pleasant! We keep the poop picked up everyday, but in hot weather we smell that smell too. Does anyone have any experience with something that we could use to spray on there to neutralize the odors, and not hurt Kasey's paws? It gets wetted down by the sprinkler system every afternoon for a few minutes, but that doesn't help at all.
wont lime burn their paws? I used to use lime in horse stalls but it was packed solid and covered with shavings. I know when I was installing/patching it burned my legs if it got on me wet.
It's AWESOME for deodorizing and if it wont burn, heck yea.
We've always used it on our yard and have never had a problem, except for one dog, our Border Collie, who had an allergic reaction to it. I suppose if they stood on it long enough and it's thick enough it would, but if you lightly sprinkle, and the dog is only out there to potty, I wouldn't think it would be a problem.
Such a small amount is used.... perhaps using a light water hosing afterward to wash it into the gravel? It's not something to be applied every day, just as needed, and how frequently will depend on the obvious, how much and how often the dog pees and poops.
There is a product called Stall Dry which is used in horse stalls, and I use it in my chicken coop with the bedding. It neutralizes odors, etc... I have not heard of it being used in dog kennels, but it is perfectly safe to use in coops, so it is probably worth checking into. A small dusting goes a long way.
Somthing else just popped into my mind... baking soda??? Like I said - it just popped in and I haven't given it any research or thought.
Barbara, you gave me an idea... we have a spot right outside the front door where our lazy pup goes first thing in morning, and it's beginning to have an odor. I have a box of baking soda... gone to sprinkle... will post results when I find out.
