"Took my dog to the orthopedic surgeon today and he said there is no need for surgery (yet) on her badly sprained ankle that hadn't healed completely from a month ago. She apparently has broken bone fragments near the ligaments that hurt her when she runs a lot.... but she never cries or anything. I didn't know she was still in pain until yesterday when I picked her up to hug her and she yelped!
He gave her a steroid shot and she has to stay in her crate exclusively (except for potty breaks) for the next MONTH. And he said no more running, EVER, or hard playing. He said I have to forever treat her like an arthritic dog..... She's only 2.5.
They initially said it was a sprain and that the bone fragment were probably part of the ligament tearing and breaking pieces of bone off with it.... But the only thing to do for the ligament (I guess) is let her rest for a month with no activity. He said that we will be dealing with this issue for the rest of her life, that once she's done this to her ankle it will just happen again if she runs hard.
I am looking for another orthopedic surgeon, there's GOT to be a better answer. Her ankle joints were ALL IN PERFECT CONDITION. He even showed me that on the x-rays, no fractures, tears, anything. I don't understand how it happened like this?!"
West TN area, Huntingdon Animal Clinic, they've hired a new vet, I haven't personally used her yet, but she's a general surgeon but has already done some orthopedics. Dr. Butler, owner, is VERY particular about his vets so I would trust her with any issue. Might give them a call, if nothing else than for a name. Dr. Butler is very helpful.... tell them I said to call if you want to. 731-986-3693.
