my friend called today with DNA results on LJ. FWIW she's trying to get rescues and humane societies to start using so they can offer more "accurate" breed descriptions.
First an explanation of results:
They will list every breed they can get a genetic match on. If something shows up for which they do not have an exact match they will use the closest breed they do have. They are rated on 5 levels:
One - Over 75% of the DNA, usually means at least one parent is a purebred.
Two - 37-74% of the DNA
Three - 20-36% DNA
Four - 10-19% of the DNA
Five - less than 10% of the dog's DNA
Harvey, my lab x "pit" mix had SEVEN breeds supposedly show up, as follows:
Both are funny! I can remember the casserole, like the Heinz 57, but I'll have to write down Ana's.... but it does sound good when it's said fast enough :-)
Lachkee Elk Bodachaner...Say it with confidence , I am sure that there will be some clueless wonder that will tell you it doesn't meet the breed standard!
I don't know the name of the company, I did this thru a friend, but I can find out. I don't know that I believe it... there are a lot of disclaimers in small print ;-) But she does, and is trying really hard to ensure the purebreds show up as that, and that enough breeds are in their database to give realistic combinations. I just thought it'd be fun. I know the sperm contributions in LJ's family tree are probably endless, as are most dogs around here. My friend said she may send in for her purebred Yorkie and see what comes back. One thing, no info on the dog is sent in with the DNA sample, just the cheek swabs, so they have no idea what they're "looking" at.
How fun!!!!
Please find the info out?
Price too,
I'd love to send in Java's (the wonder farm dog), and the Pyr's...I know their background....Dad was a registered Pyr, Mom's dad was registered Pyr, Mom's mom was a Pyr Anatolian cross.
It would be interesting to see what it came up with since I know What is in their back ground, but they aren't pure bred. Kinda see how it handles a "mut" where the background is known.
