Hi All,
I'm still here working hard with Lilly..
She is doing great, putting on weight and full of energy..
She loves to play tug..I'm not training her to be anything other then a house dog and a therapy dog. Is playing tug with her a good idea..she loves it and it gets a lot of her energy out. If so can you please recommend a good tug toy. I have looked at the tugs on the website and it's overwhelming any input on just something I can use to play with her that she won't destroy in 2 seconds
1. 10" synthetic mini tug - got 2 of them as first tugs for my (then)2 dogs. The dogs won't bite into them, looked awkward.
2. 8" synthetic puppy tug - got this one with Tug DVD when we got our 3rd 27lb dog with the idea of building up drive in all 3. Worked like a charm. Definitely get the DVD - it's amazing and was a great help.
3. 12" soft leather tug - got it with #2 for variety and in case somebody prefers a different tug. All 3 dogs love it, it's the favorite now. After using #2 and #3 with the DVD for a couple of months my dogs now tug with #1, even the 27lb one - built up their strength and drives.
I will probably get a 2-handle tug and a jute one for variety and to build up their drives more. Wasn't able to find anything close to this quality anywhere locally.
Tug is an awesome game for any dog as long as you play by the rules (see tug video). I have the intermediate tug set from this site and they are great. The main thing to remember about toys is that they are for interacting with YOU! Toys shouldn't be used to pacify a dog while you aren't around (toys not the same and CHEW items). As long as that's clear, the tugs should last a very long time. Happy Tugging!
Thanks Lisa...
Are you referring to the video by Michael Ellis?
I have that on my list to buy but need to wait a few months as I just spent $$$$ on other videos!
-Not bulky and easy to hide
-Stands up really well to chewing
-Teaching the out seemed to be easier because it is harder for them to self satisfy than it is on a fluff stuffed tug
Some dogs though really prefer a softer bite than that, so it is really hard to tell. I personally would grab a few and try them. try to get different material, sizes and consistency.
I happen to L-O-V-E that video, and it has made a big difference in my dog and my training program. Most of the stuff he explained I was aware of.... However, Mr. Ellis has a way of explaining little tips and tricks that work wonders. It's worth the dough.
