The Pit Bull Terrier is not recommended for a guard dog or for personal protection because they were bred for many years to NOT bite humans. This is so that the trainer could reach into the fighting ring and grab the dog and not be bitten.
Pit Bulls that were aggressive toward humans were not a good representation of the breed and were put down.
Of course, today, as I have read in other threads, the breed is so messed up from bad breeding who really knows.
There should be more regulations on breeding in America. IMO.
This is a working forum. It is not the working pit bull people responsible for the bad image of the apbt, nor for the bite statistics. It is the backyard breeders pumping out pups and the irresponsible owners who let them run loose. All thru Europe there are schutzhund and IPO titled/trained APBTs and Amstaffs. Those are not the problem, it is the ignorant pet owners and gangster type people that ruin it for everyone.
bred to not redirect to humans WHILE IN A DOG FIGHT, and bred to not be aggressive to humans, when no threat is present.
the idea that, because they were selected to not be human aggressive, they shouldn't or can't be trained in and compete in these sports, or work is based on a HUGE misunderstanding of the work.
human aggressiveness has nothing to do with protection sport and work. This kind of sport/work DOES NOT encourage human aggressiveness, as it is defined by the general public. Can it look that way to the general public, who one see videos of the dogs biting a sleeve and lunging/barking?? sure.
This is still a working breed, and personally, i feel that a proper bully SHOULD respond in the face of a real threat, and love the fight it brings too, as that is correct.
breeders have moved too far away from this, in the move to make a "great pet dog", another good workign dog has been diminished.
More breeders should be working their bully breeds, and bitework is a great way to do this, assuming the restof the training under the dog is not ignored. What we DONT need is a owner who only comes out to bitework sessions, and doesn't do a lick of OB or anything else with the dog, and brags about how badass their pit bull is.
again, actual human aggression is a big issue, bitework is NOT human aggression.
