Ok, this may be covered in here somewhere but I didn't find it.
I am using the prong with my american bulldog who is DA. I have been correcting him with the leash and verbally to "leave it" when he reacts to dog noises.
For example - hears a dog barking in distance, ears perk - I correct with a leash pop and verbaly and continue walking. This applies to any reaction to dogs and/or dog noises.
I have found that my leash pop isn't "quick and fluid", it seems that it takes a bit for the slack to come and to me seems late and sloppy. I am using a quick release medium sized prong on the active ring - should I be using both rings for a quicker correction or will that lessen it more?
Make sure your prong collar is fitted properly. Leerburg has a section on how the prong should fit on your dog. If the prong is not fitter properly then it will have too much slack and therefore you will not be giving a good solid correction.
Also, if the prong is fitted correctly, make sure you are holding the leash close to the clip. Maybe 6 inches or so from the clip. This way you can deliver a quick pop with no lag time due to slack from the leash
I usually hold close to the clip with the hand closest to the dog and either 1) let the rest of the leash drag behind or 2) hold the rest in the other hand.
Sage is a handsome guy, and yes, you need to be able for both your wife and yourself control him if he is to be handled by both. I had a wake up call this past weekend with my GSD which made me realize I had slacked off on training with distractions, and I've begun working on that again, and will increase as we go. It sounds like Sage welcomes the sound of his collar/leash which is a good sign, so introduce the tighter collar gradually/easily so as not disrupt that happy anticipation. I hope your injuries continue to heal well and allow you to train and enjoy your pup!
Tamara,
Where ever you hold the leash, make sure you give direction verbaly FIRST. What ever comes after is the correction (for ignoring a KNOWN command).
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
