It might be that your pup is not one to bark. But also your pup is still very young and in time as the dog matures, eventually it will begin to bark.
One of my dogs is very vocal and the other is not. The one who is not a barker per say, had to mature some before he would bark at strangers at the door. That is the only time he barks and sometimes when he wants to play with my female.
Yup, what Joyce said. My current pup was incredibly quiet until he turned about five or six months old. When he finally DID bark, I was astounded to hear that he had a very big, booming voice! He used it somewhat liberally for awhile, and then it moderated as he matured.
He's still not a very 'barky' adult, but will bark an alert quite reliably when appropriate.
Like others have said, your dane is young, but I will add that when he does start to bark, his bark will alert your entire neighborhood that someone is at your door! I have volunteered with a dane facility...two things you learn really quick..never teach them to speak, and four on the floor! My pup is almost 6 months and I have yet to hear him make a noise, not a problem for me!
We had a grey hound / lab mix we picked up from the pound when she was about a year old. She didn't start barking until a few years later, and even then only on rare occasions.
The two JRTs I have now are barkers. I'm with Lisa. enjoy the peace and quiet.
I backtied my dog (which is just tethering the dog to something like a tree), grabbed his favorite toy, and had to literally run around the corner of my house. When he made the slightest noise I'd run back and reward him with some play. It just took a few minutes a time, a few times a day, and he got the point. From there I went into alert bark training.
