Can anyone give me some good ideas for exercising Toby until I can get him somewhat under control with our walking. He will do the treadmill, but only for around 10 minutes. He gets so distracted in the yard, that fetch tends not to last very long. He LOVES find it, where I hide food for him, but that's not very draining physically.
We did a "training walk" around the block today, and he tried to pull towards 2 people and a dog in a not good way, so I am not taking him anymore until I can at least get him to stop the constant pulling.

Running off leash at a dog park, running around with other dogs?
I'm not sure if your dog is friendly with other dogs from your post though, or if you have any dog parks around.

Kelly: How old is your dog? Please don't give up on the walks.
Are you using a prong collar?

He is 6 months old and after I used a prong collar, he became VERY skittish and is now pulling towards and growling at other people on our walks.

I say a big fat NO to letting your dog run around with other dogs at the dog park.
In fact I give a big fat NO to dog parks at all.
http://leerburg.com/dogparks.htm
If you are having problems with your dog being re-active to other dogs taking him there would not do him any good at all.
please read the link about Ed's (and alot of members on this board)views on dog parks.
OB is a great way to tire out your dog physically & mentally.
I have read your other threads and really don't think that giving up on walks right now is going in the righ direction Kelly.
is there not a time you could walk the pup when very few people would be out, like earlier in the morning and later at night?
Your pup is going to need a physical outlet in order for him to not get frustrated and i feel if you start omiting all walks things will only get worse for you as your pup will have way too much pent up energy to learn much of anything.

Betty, here is the other thread on this particular pup...

(kelly im just posting this link so that you don't have to go into great detail again about the problems you are having.)

I have started a little agility course of sorts in our yard. Working with him on the course is both mentally and physically draining. I have a small jump (12" or so), a tire for him to go through, a waterboard he has to sit on at beginning and end, and now a rope tied from a tree limb with a large knot tied on the end that he is to grab and pull for the reward. Retrieving the ball is also part of the course, sometimes I throw it a long way for him to chase, sometimes I hide it. I plan to add more before he tires of these (see-saw is next).

Are you getting the Training with Food DVD next, try to get it sooner rather than later. Marker training, to me at least, mentally tires a puppy\dog out. You will also get a lot training in while working through your other problems, they should be done in a distraction free environment anyways.
Here is why, by using markers, you train the dog to think for him or herself vs. teaching a dog to turn off pressure (compulsion, not much thinking there, except this hurts) This mentally wears out a young mind, for example, puppy thinks: how do I get to that food, sit, nope, down, nope, walk nicely, YES, big juicy treat, repeat. They learn to think during training (= exercise) this wears them out, plus the dog really starts to like training vs. oh, not this $*** again.
Don’t go to dog parks….
Like Paula said, a little agility course is also a good idea, I built weave poles and a ladder for $23 last winter because it gets to 30 below outside (too cold for me not the dogs) but it was also a lot of fun.
Have fun, it will be worth it!!!

Kelly: How about some focus training. " Watch Me". I started
Luna on this when she was 10 weeks old. By the time we got to
advanced obedience her focus while heeling was great. We even
won a silly prize for the best "focus on handler" exercise.
Once he learns this you may have a better time on your walks as
you can redirect him to Watch Me when a dog or person goes by.

He LOVES find it, where I hide food for him, but that's not very draining physically. Gradually make it tougher for him. Key word being gradually. You don't want to increase the difficulty so much that he gets bored.

I am just EXTREMELY nervous walking him. On one hand, he pulls relentlessly. I am trying to work on this by stopping EVERY time he pulls. We aren't getting very far at all! As soon as he sees someone now, he is pulling like a maniac towards them and given his last 2 reactions when he got near to someone, I'm a nervous wreck! I was even nervous when my neighbor came near him, who my dog likes. The thing is that he used to love almost everyone. Now he's just totally unpredictable and I don't trust him at all. I find this very upsetting and I really don't know what to do. I'm going to watch the full Pack Structure video. I watched about the first hour so far. I'm also trying to adapt that to a puppy. I started a whole other thread on that.
