Hello everyone,
My 9 week old male rottweiler is a bit mouthy. I redirect by shaking his favorite toy in front of him, and this always works. Is there anything else I can do to change his behavior? If I dont keep playing with him he goes right back to my sock/pant leg/hand, etc.. I know he's young and most puppies do this, but I dont want it to be a continuing problem when he's older.
Also, at what age is it ok to start correcting? I've read that at this point I just want to build a strong bond, which is working, but if he humps my leg (weird?) I quickly shove him off and hold him down for a second.. I assume this is not the correct way to handle a 9 week old rottweiler? Please let me know.
Redirecting is good, it's going to go on for awhile, imo you really don't want to do any heavy correcting until they are about six months old. I would try a loud verbal correction as well as the shove off for the humping. be consitant with the word you use for correction. might want to consider training in German. Ed's DVD "Your Puppy eight weeks to eight months" is excellent, for the price of a big bag of dog food it can't be beat.
