4 days post op. Ember had a 6 in dermoid sinus cyst removed from her neck and was spayed on Wednesday. I use a rolled towel fastened around her neck to keep her from licking the spay stitches. However she has begun to scratch her neck stitches with her hind foot. Any ideas on how to prevent this? photo bucket

I'd ask the vet if it's OK to use the donut kind of collar; it's meant to keep the dog from having access to incisions, etc. (like the old cone-collars but far less traumatic for the dog), and it would also eliminate access to the dog's neck with his paws because that's where the donut is.

Do the stitches look dry and clean? Can you get the donut collar and use it, checking frequently that the stitches are not becoming damp? JMO, and I'm not a health professional of any kind, but I'd probably go with preventing the dog's claws from opening the incision if I had no way to check before Monday.
Just called, vet is not available. Stitches look great. Other than using the collar to prevent scratching is there any ointments to help with the itch?

Do you have the post-op home-care handout? It should say whether you can use a triple-antibiotic cream on it or not.
I know that I've been told more than once not to put anything on a healing incision, but I don't know whether it depends on the kind of sutures or the age of the incision. I have gently patted around the area with witch hazel on a steri-pad to soothe it and help with itching.
There is no tech or substitute returning the surgeon's calls on the weekends?
My vet is a one lady practice, small animal and horses mostly. Just got the answering machine and a phone # to another Emergency Clinic/ Hospital in case of "Emergency"
Wish I had thought to ask at the time...The post op sheet didn't specifically mention it.
A big thank you to all. It is a real blessing to know there are others out there who can share their experiences and knowledge.
Ehh... ok...Ember did manage to pop one or two stitches late yesterday evening, not quite sure how...Wouldn't leave the E-collar alone...
The vet put in 3 staples to close it back up. There seems to be some fluid still pooling under the skin. Have been doing warm compress 2x a day per vet's instruction. Diligently keeping a bootie on those back feet.
