In brief, I was contacted about a 3 year old female mini Dachshund in serious need of a new home, if she is not placed ASAP, the owner will have her put to sleep! She has been allowed to be mauled by 3 very young children and is very fearful of them.
I have a lot going on here, but the thought of her being PTS haunts me, so I am considering taking her, working with her, re
homing her. This is what I will be dealing with, so would like feedback.
Barks 24/7...a collar would be a must, constant nuisance barking would drive me nuts, plus I have a business from the home, the barking wouldn't work. I am hoping the change would eliminate this. for a few days anyway!
She is not crate trained...She will be!
Not housebroken....she will be!
submissive urination...
Fearful, but was told she has never bitten.
Foster dogs take a considerable amount of time, and my GSD, Roger, is only 6.5 months old, I don't want to take away from time working with him. I am looking for feedback as to why I should/shouldn't take her in!
Thank you!

What's a little difficulty and management compared to saving the dog's life? I've got 3 rescue dogs, it's not that bad at all.

Hi Ana, That's what I always tell myself, "What's one more"!
I have always had three dogs of my own, plus a rescue or a service dog in training. My next service dog will be here in July. After the initial few days of restructuring, things always seem to work out! I really feel that once she is out of her situation, on a routine, and given some training, she could be placed in a better home.

You can do this. Just remember - crates are our friends. I would be lost without mine. (I have 6 dogs, I only purchased one). I LOVE my crates.
Best wishes for a successful rescue and rehome! and I bet that non-stop barking will diminish or quit altogether once she feels secure. I liken it to a frightened toddler sucking his/her thumb. Once the confidence goes up, the barking goes down.

Perfect timing for this topic. I am in the process of bringing in the 7th dog. I swear my mouth has some issues! But back to your post, in reality there will always be a dog in need. Roger is only a little guy for so long, if this stage is important to you than honor that guilt free.

Have to agree with Aimee on behalf of your pup.
I actually took in a mini-dachshund when he was two, same scenario, captive in an apartment with two little holy terrors. When I went to look at him, the kids would slap him if he walked in front of them while they played video games.
Talk about a neurotic little bundle of nerves. We still have him - Lynyrd is 13 now. Several jaw surgeries (rotten teeth...), and two crushed disks (semi-paralysis) later, he still barks, then HOWLS at the slightest disturbance. Cute little dapple bugger, but... I've actually been concerned about bringing a new pup in - would definitely take some management since Lynyrd reacts at everything, including cats that breathe his air...sigh...did I mention he's a cute little bugger?
So, do as I say, not as I do. Find the dachshund a nice home where he can be an single spoiled, neurotic dog. Alternatively, let the current owner deal with the situation. You did not create, nor do you have to assume ownership of this problem.
Good luck.

Thanks all! I have many rescue pets that have become mine, including three cats, that have all become permanent due to extensive health conditions, . It was great reading Rob's post as this situation is so similar, and I need to consider the possibility that she could become mine! This owner is, and has been, so Irresponsible!

I will meet with the owner on Sunday, and I have decided that I will take her. I know of two senior couples that would love her. My gutt is telling me that with some time being removed from the kids, some of the issues will be greatly reduced. This dog has had no routine, no training, and fears these kids.
Thank you for asking...I'll keep you posted!

You are a good doobie, Tammi. A little tuneup in the "Tammi Moore School of Dog Manners" and the pup will live happily ever after as an only spoiled dog.
