Hi all, I am looking to find how others would deal with the following situation.
We have a large fenced in yard that is currently enclosed with cedar stockade, the rear of the property is enclosed by another fence area, chain link, and this area is where I take Roger for exercise. The property behind us has a dog that constantly storms the fence, and is left out most of the time, so far, Roger doesn’t pay any attention to this, and his focus stays on his ball or disc. We are having the stockade fencing replaced now, the side yards will now be visible , the neighbors on the right have small very yappy dogs that run up and down the fence line and are also always out. I would like to let Roger romp in the larger area while I am out there, but I know these small dogs will create a problem for a pup with a lot of prey drive! I would like to hear how others would work with this…

You could put privacy fencing/netting (??) in the chainlink to keep the dogs from seeing each other. Another alternative would be to plant some bushes or hedges that would block sight as well as access to the fence.
While you can, and I'm sure will, work with your dog on ignoring the other dogs unfortunately there is little or nothing you can do about the other dogs or about their ignorant owners.

That's a difficult problem. The only sure fix is to spend about $20,000 and build a 6-foot block wall around the yard, but it doesn't sound like that is the look you are after either.
Good luck.

Elaine, I have tried many thing. These 6 little dogs are out all the time...Geez, my small dogs are only out for brief periods, with me, and I don't allow them over on that side. They bark, run the length of the fence, poke their little noses thru, and dig under! I put another fence up 3 ft away from that one. It is a very large area for the privacy weaves, but this may be my next step, however, there has been a very large Red Tail Hawk roosting on my pool fence!

Rob, I would so love this!

We have spent that amount and more between fencing for dogs, pool, livestock, if I could do it over, this is what I would do!

My own little compound!
There is a house on an acre down the street from us that has its' backyard fenced to 6' or more with block. I'd hate to pay for it but love to have it.
We chose our current house because of the yard and proximity to walking/biking trails and parks. For us? Nah - for the dogs
The yapper dogs can get irritating, even with a block fence. We have some neighbors a few houses down that have three mini-shnauzers. Those guys just go berzerk on a regular basis. I'd hate to live next door to that.
I'm sure you'll get something figured out. Good luck!

As a small dog owner I get totally disgusted with people who allow theirs to yap all the time. They give all small dogs and their owners a bad name. I hope you can figure out a solution to this problem.

I was getting totally ticked with my own family for letting the dogs bark! My DH is going deaf, and has that lovely concentrating deafness that he can turn on. The kids plug in ear buds and ignore it too.
I finally have scheduled myself enough home with the pack time to reretrain the dogs to be civil when greeting people and NOT BARK at every gust of wind and passing car! It was getting annoying! And wouldn't you know it was three of the dogs (for the most part) that are the sweetest, most biddable BRATS. Last thing I want is barking rat dogs with summer coming (eventually) and windows open. It is bad enough Kelsey has dementia and barks at nothing endlessly if not corrected. (lovely at 3 in the morning)

Oh, man, we have an old mini-dachshund whose barker sometimes gets stuck. His eyes sortof glaze over, and he can go on and on and on. Sometimes it progresses to a howl, but...
I hadn't considered the dementia angle, but that describes him too. Then again, he didn't start with much upstairs...

The fence is finished! Like I said before, Roger does not pay attention to the big dog, in the back of the yard, that storms and barks the entire time we are out. I let my youngest daughter take him, once, to her work while she fed/walked/medicated the borders, and she said "It's wierd, he acts like the dogs are not there!" These small dogs will be a test, and hard to resist with his prey drive. I walked him over, on leash, with his disc and started throwing it, small dogs sound off as expected, he looked at them, I threw his disc, he got it, quick looks, but not the drama I expected. Roger hasn't started barking since I have had him, still quiet for now. He does have that attitude "I know who I am, I don't need too prove anything to you!" I hope it doesn't later translate into "Come into my orbit and you must be eliminated!'
