I am new to the working dog scene and need some help with training. If anyone has a good training exercise to teach a dog to heel, and how to become a good protection dog as well, and doesn't mind giving me step by step instructions I would really appreciate it. And any info. on the correct way to obedience train a dog would be a huge help. Thank you.
Welcome to the forum. Do you already have a pup, and if so, how old and what breed? Is this your first dog?
You can not go wrong with beginning to train your dog using Marker training; it can be used for pretty much any behavior you want to teach. There are videos available as well as free e-book info on this site which will get you going.
If training a ppd was as simple as following step by step instructions, we would all have one! I think you are going to find this is a long, involved process and will require the assistance of some very experienced trainers to ensure you end up with a well balanced dog and not a nut case. Are there any Schutzhund clubs in your area?
Depending on the age of your dog (assuming you have one at this time) there are some really great videos available which will help you train your dog. It is nice having something on hand which you can watch over and over again to get the techniques down... All the Michael Ellis dvds are great!
Yes, I do have a dog now, actually I have 2 dogs. I have a 23 month old black & tan male working line German Shepherd and, an 8 month old working line sable female German Shepherd. I bought my male from an Ohio State Trooper who raises some good dogs and, I bought my female from Nancy Rhynard of Westwood Kennels. I have my male obedience trained and he listens pretty good but I don't think he has what it takes for a ppd dog. My female on the other hand I think has what it takes to be a ppd dog, she loves to bite the sleeve. I have a few DVD's from Leerburg that help some but there's no replacement for working a dog with someone who knows what to do. There is a schutzund club fairly close that I plan to attend & learn more about these dogs. Obedience I can handle fairly well except I would like to know a good technique to train my dogs to heel. As far as protection training I will have to do with someone who knows how to get the correct response out of my dog. Any help with heeling would be great. Thanks
Here is one link which has some good info and a nice video of Frost. I used marker training and began working Falcon against the garage wall to help keep him the right position, and it didn't take long at all. Nothing negative, keep it fun so the dog wants to work with you.
