Hey guys, I got a kind of strange request but as I am unsure how to exactly search it, I will just make a post if thats alright. Link me if this has been asked multiple times.
In short, I have a dog who has to be restricted to her crate for at least 4 weeks. I am not allowed to take her for walks, have to keep her exercise to a minimum, etc, hence staying in crate.
Now I am looking for some mentally stimulating toys/interactive toys that I can use inside of a crate. I can find many interactive toys that are to be used out of a crate, but not in it. I am open to all suggestions so if you use a kong, tell me how you use it. The dog is supervised 100% with items so anything given to the dog is taken away when I leave whether a few minutes or a few hours. I just need something to keep this dog occupied as I've already done one week and I'm on the edge of just saying forget the restrictions. Also, I am still open to interactive toys outside the crate, but those will be my last, last resort. Thanks in advance.
With kongs one thing I have done is use dry food in part and seal it with wet food(can food or peanut butter tho it is messy) then freeze it..it takes a long time working on the "frozen food" to get it out..need to consider it is part of daily intake tho..
If not worried about mess you could try chicken or beef broth frozen into ice cubes and they can bat it around...
I think clean run sells them and some petstores do too. My guys love them and they can easily blow time on them.
We do lots of frozen kongs too. Peanut Butter is soft and goes quick but frozen meat, chicken necks, potato, stock, pasta goes slowly. Just stuff it good and tight. If you are concerned with calories, stuff the bottom with something good then a layer of water or stock then a little more good stuff on top. The chest freezers do a better job than a fridge freezer.
Tarter Buster bones are good too and last a good long while.
If you are open to it, you can teach lots of games through the crate. All click and treat kind of thing.
- wag tail
- smile (Whisper liked this one)
- touch nose to hand or plastic lid or whatever
- touch paw
- blink
- lick
- tilt head one way or another
- bark
Whisper has done a total of 8 months of total rest in her lifetime (now 3) so it's do-able! She was a sport dog before all this so it's not like she is a couch potatoe Do the rehab right, it's worth it!!!

When I did the math for Whisper's 3 elbow surgeries, I added in the toys and enough kongs to feed all 3 for 2 meals for 7 days (yes I own that many now)!!!
Now we have a kong bucket that we chuck them into all week long and I fill them on Sunday afternoon for the whole week.
