My GSD puppy will be 11 months old next week. He is a wonderful dog, still has his rambunctious ways but is as sweet as can be.
The reason I'm writing is that he has not yet started to lift his leg when he pees. All the info I have from books, internet etc. says that he will start lifting anytime now. The thing is when he squats to urinate most of the time he pees on the back of one of his front paws. He's so big and gangly, 27"shoulder(90lbs) I guess it will take awhile for him to get balanced enough to lift his leg. I just have to keep cleaning his peed on legs each time he comes back in the house.
Have any of you had this experience with their big pups?
You might try taking him where other male dogs have urinated and see if he tries to lift his leg to mark over them.
My male was about 2 or 3 before he started lifting his leg.
I picked up a stray one day and brought him to the house while I contacted the number on his collar. This male was markin' all over the back yard and all of a sudden my male started lifting his leg to mark, too.
Never did it until that day. That stray male taught mine how to lift his leg.
Oh gee-wiz that would be something...having to clean the back of his front paws for 2-3 years? or forever! I hope that's not the case..but if it is I'll have to change his name to
Piss-Paw! LOL!
We live out in the woods with no other dogs around so I will have to borrow somebodys male to teach him.

It's not just boys who learn leg lifting from other boys. Girls can and do learn the art of leg lifting as well from other dogs. It's just funnier to see.

Worked for us!
Melissa, I had a marking female. It was pretty comical. She never got close enough to the target she wanted to mark and pretty much was just hiking her leg into thin air. Pissin' in the wind!
One of the males I acquired at 9 mos of age, now 5yr, will only lift his leg when he is with the crew and out in the big wide world. Otherwise he is a squatter. One the other hand I have a female that really lifts her hind so far in that air that she isn't exactly neat. Win some, lose some. It totally makes sense that he might follow suit as Aaron and Michael responded.
