This is from 2003? I can't believe that I haven't seen this before. I don't know why, but it looks fake to me. This vid is too grainy, but it looks like the dog is wearing a muzzle (???) and it looks like the wall is sparking in a weird way after the shots. Maybe I am making myself believe that it is fake just to keep from getting even more angry.
Weird. I swear it looks like the K-9 is wearing a muzzle. I can't imagine why he would be sent with one on.
Also, I cannot find any reputable articles (LA Times, etc. ) with the story. All of the pages are questionable (anyone can post on wiki, plus the "digitalganster" site (??).
Melissa, were you able to find any legit reports online?
Not one of LAPDs finest moments. Nobody wins in a situation like that, least of all the K9 that was being sent to his death by the handler who he thought was his PARTNER.
That video really shook me up. Thank god I watched it on my Blackberry and couldn't see things all that clearly. I also couldn't make out the text at the end.
I don't know anything about police work and how situations like that should be handled but it didn't make sense to me why the dog was deployed to begin with. Obviously they knew the dog wouldn't get very far and the guy would fire his weapon, therefore opening the floodgates. But there's really no other options? That's not what K9's are for. I'm assuming this was a huge slip-up on someone's part.
Maybe someone with police/K9 experience could clarify how situations like that should actually be handled. I have always been fascinated and in awe of police dogs. It really hurts to watch that.
So they will send a dog to someone with a gun and a really clear shot? Doesn't that seem like lost cause? Or is there a better success rate at that than I'm assuming?
Like I said, I don't know how any of that is supposed to work I just figured there would be other ways to flush out a suspect. That's depressing. That's exactly why I'm not cut out for that kind of work. My solution would be to just shoot the jerk.
