Hi. I'm looking for some advice. I have a mixed puppy 6 months old I rescued.I'm going to learn and train him myself.I've never trained a dog before.
Just got three DVD's in the mail Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months, Establishing Pack Structure, and Basic Obedience. I've watched 8 Weeks to 8 months twice and i'm 1/4 of the way through Basic Obedience. Is there any order I should have watched the DVD's?
From the DVD's I'm thinking the first step is placing value on the mark. I'm using the word YES. Ed talks of the rule of 30 being a dog retaining something after repeating it thirty times. Does this mean if i do 2 to 3 minute sessions of placing value on the word yes, for any positive behavior, 10 reps each session, by the third session my dog should be getting the value of the word yes? Or after thirty days of repeating the same thing?
I think 30 is a generalization, but after a few days and possibly even a day you should have loaded the marker. Just say yes and treat over and over and they dog will begin to associate the marker of "yes" with a reward. This will allow you to mark a behavior while he is doing it and gives you a second to get the reward ready when learning new behaviors.
I would get 30 or so treats and just say yes and treat for all of them. You can do this a couple times a day and your dog will get the connection very quickly.
I would also recommend Ed's article on marker training(and for that matter, all of the articles on leerburg). Read this before you start training: http://leerburg.com/markers.htm
