Do you guys feed, what Ralphs calls, Beef Back Ribs? They were super cheap this morning so I got a package, but want to check before I give him any. They are so much harder than the chicken bones - could they break his teeth? Is it ok if they swallow pieces of the harder bone?
Hi Lori, I think I know what you mean - the bones are curved and flattish and about as thick as a finger? I gave those to my dogs a couple of times and did not like the results. There were shards of undigested bone in the poop. Also they splintered lengthwise while the dogs chewed on them, looked pretty sharp. Monty could probably have them because he is not an aggressive chewer and gnaws on them rather than crushing them but still...
I haven't done it yet, but was just reading in Raw Dog Food by Carina Beth MacDonald that it is okay to do. Her philosophy is that if the dog eats it in a short period, it is nutritional, if they chew and chew for hours, it is recreational. The other thing to consider is the meat to bone ratio, I suppose.
My plan was that the next time we had beef ribs is that I would cut one off for Maggie BEFORE I grill the rest for us!! It may just be a treat and not a meal, we'll see. I'll take the bone away if it doesn't look good.
Tasha is a pretty aggressive chewer and for her the beef back ribs ended up being recreational. She ate part of the bone over the course of a few hours.
She can eat a lamb rib in 3 seconds, so I guess the beef ribs must be pretty hard. I don't give them to her anymore because the shape of the bone makes me nervous for recreational chewing.
