Maggie, my GS pup, "found" us about 6 weeks ago. When I took her for shots, the vet guessed her to be about 4-5 months old. She is shedding her canines now. She lives outside with my older dogs. I have taught her to lead, watch and sit. We are working on come....she comes most of the time. She listens very well.
Which dvd do you recommend for me....the puppy to 8 months or the basic obedience?
Yoy have taught her to "lead?" What's that? (Not familiar with that term.)
DVD wise, I'd say go with the Power of Training Dogs with Markers, if you're not familiar with marker training. It's not one of the two you've mentioned, but it will give you some basic skills that you can then use to train lots of stuff...like anything<g>.
Sorry for my use of "lead"..I train horses too...They are trained to lead. Dogs, I guess, are leash trained?
Hello fellow Horse Trainer. Welcome to the forums.
Because I spend half my day training Horses and another half training Dogs. I get equipment names mixed up in conversation all the time.
I found myself grabbing my Horse grooming tools and a lung whip the other day to go work some dogs, half way into the field I stopped and thought to myself, "well this is embarrassing". Hahaha.
Although I have found Horse lung whips to be really nice for agitating dogs, the ones I own when pop'ed hard sound like a .22LR round. I have been able to really fire them up using one.
Back to your question. If I was going to go with either of the two you mentioned, the OB one is probably the route I would go. The 8 weeks-8 months has a lot of nice info in it though. They both are good.
So is the training with Markers.
Thank you for the welcome fellow horse lover. I only train my own horses now. So I have a little more time to do other things like training my Maggie.
And thanks for the recommendation too. I may go ahead and get the package of all three dvds. I could probably use all of the information.
8 weeks to 8 months covers basic marker (intro really), potty training, crate, loose leash walking, sit, come, grooming a gsd and how to get them used to being touched by different things, how to deal with kids, jumping, the Yuck! command, etc. If this is going to be a house dog and she's not potty trained yes I would get this one. Basic OB goes into this basic stuff more and adds heeling etc. If it were me (I own both DVDs) and I had to order these again and this is going to be :
1) an inside dog
2) not potty trained
3) I didn't know marker training
So if this was me I would get this package:
House training problems
Basic OB training
8 weeks to 8 months
Now if you dont think you need any of the basic stuff, and you are interested in Marker training, Food drive in dogs while doing marker training, and Tug with your dog I would get this package:
The power of training dogs with Markers
The power of training dogs with Food and
The power of playing Tug with your dog
The michael ellis set from what I have heard ( I am getting this for myself for x-mas ) is amazing to put it simply. jmo. I hope this helps. I think (anyone correct me if I am wrong) if you call the Leerburg office and let them know what you need or you can email them they can guide you which DVD(s) would be great for you. They are a great help and are full of info.
