stick their heads out to the window of the car? Kasey loves to stick his out, but I'm wondering if it's bad for their ears somehow. We don't let him on the highways - just around town and on backroads, etc. I guess our $200 sedation/ear cleaning last week is prompting the question!!

Bad for eyes, I knew (not just projectiles, but also drying to the eyeball), but here are some additional possibilities I just came across:

No, I don't let my dogs ride around uncrated. After a friend of the family lost his dog in a 20 mph collision coming out of a parking lot. The poor Chesapeake hit the dash head first and died instantly.
I do own one of those seatbelt things for my lab but I find I usually just end up making her ride in the back in a crate anyways.

We have the harness thing that Leerburg sells so he can't go flying anywhere. He's tethered to the seat and can only walk back and forth - I know about the accident concerns.
I've seen a dog with a missing eye from sticking his head out the window. He was nailed by a rock getting kicked up by a car in front of them. I don't allow it, for the same reason I didn't let my daughter do it: it isn't safe.
Ditto on the dog being secured in the car. My dog's crate is too big for my car, but I have a wagon with a barrier, my dog rides in the back.

Man Connie, way to ruin the dog's fun!!! That is a good article though. Guess we'll have to keep the windows up most of the way so he can only sniff the air. When he gets mad I'll tell him it's Connie's fault! Thanks for the helpful info!
They make expandable window screens for cars, just for dogs to get air safely. I bought a couple of them years ago, though I can't remember where. They work great.

Oooh, now that sounds like something to check out!
I let my dog rest his nose out the passenger side window behind the side mirror....he's not allowed to stick his head out (unless we've stopped somewhere). and the nose thing is only allowed at slow speeds (he really doesn't want to do it much anyway...just on really hot days because my car has no AC)
He's also belted in place...though I'm looking for alternatives since he tends to hogtie himself with his seatbelt harness....
