My brother just called, his 7 year old GSD can not walk,Shaky, vomiting, glassy eyes..He’s driving the dog around as the first vet suggested he be PTS without any testing!!!!! The vet he is at now is saying it’s vestibular disease, but he doesn’t have a head tilt, no shaky eye movements, and it’s not that he just isn’t standing, he appears to have no feeling. The dog has no medical history. Fine yesterday and early am, sudden onset.
Sorry this is so fast, I’ll stay logged in, but if anyone has any thoughts, I’d appreciate it.
Tammy, is there any chance this dog ate gum or something else with xylitol? This can cause a severe hypoglycemic reaction and eventual organ failure and worse. Any vet should be able to check for blood sugar level very easily.
If it were my dog, I would try to get some sugar water into him to see if it helps. It's not going to hurt him if he's not hypoglycemic...
My first thought was diabetes too, a blood sugar check? Spleen? Thyroid? Assuming that the symptoms lasted longer than a seizure? Will also send healing to you all...
Abdominal X-ray for obstruction/torsion? Glassy eyes = pain.
I wondered about that too. Also, pancreatitis can apparently cause some major pain and similar symptoms.
