Can you guys reccomend the best type or brand of nail clippers for very large, black dog nails.
My hand strength is not great so I need the best pair I can get.
I have a dremmel, that is a no go. All I have to do is pick it up and he is gone to "his room"
I have bought three pairs and all of them are crappy. We have been doing lots of foot massages and touch nail-click-treat
I am now been able to sneak in one nail cut at a time, but I can tell that they pinch.
I could take him in to get them done again, but I'd rather just do it at home if I can.
I struggle with those bypass type. I preffer the cheap guillotine
ones that don't last as long. I can get a better angle and a smoother cut. If Loki is pulling away, I would be worried about cracking and splitting his nail with the bypass style.
I use a large Millers Forge clipper. I love them. Sharp, quick, easy to use. I think that I got it from here. Can't remember. I have seen them in the better pet stores.
Good point Steve, the guillotine does allow for angle and cleaner cut. The bypass style does leave them a little rough on the edges I have been doing when the nail is a little softer, like after a bath and luckily never split a nail. I guess I just got frustrated with the guillotine style breaking at the most inconvient time....I hate clipping nails. I know a lot of people exercise them on concrete for better maintenance and less clipping. I certainly don't want to split a nail, ooch....
Jennifer maybe others could post different techniques that might help get them all done at one sitting since you have done the prep work of introduction and rewarding. Have you tried different positions like lying, sitting or standing with the foot flipped back?
It seems like most vets and groomers that I've noticed use the bypass type. But I struggle with them. I lay the shepherds on their back with their feet up and just go right through all of them. If I don't dremmel Andy, I usually position him so that I can do it a little like shoeing a horse.
