Well today is one of thous lazy hot days for Himmel(Female Dobbie) and I.
So, I thought I would take it easy and just let her run some energy off this afternoon. I had to work on the farm today, so she was in the crate for about 11 hours. =(
So, there is a school about 2 blocks from my house that has about a 6 acre flat open fenced in "school yard" I take her to to let her run.
I did some basic heel/stop OB with her on the way to and from and once I got to the school yard I just let her run around, play fetch and stuff.
So, while she was running around I would wait for her to stop, or get 50+ yards away from me and then I would turn the opposite way and run as fast as I could and she would see me and start running after me pretty dang fast.
I guessed I would stretch her 9 month old legs and air her out a bit.
Well in the process some guy slams on his breaks, jumps out of the car and comes to "my aid". He thought I was being chased by a crazy dog and running for my life.
I guess with his windows up and the AC on he could not hear me running and laughing and saying good girl-good girl.
He then proceeded to tell me that these dogs and dogs like it are very dangerous dogs and should not be played with like this, or in his opinion owned at all.
I thanked him for his concern and stopping to see if I was about to get killed. Looked at my dog, shrugged and went home.

Did this exact same thing once when I was around 17 with our family female dobe - that dog could flat out RUN. Once I took my mom on a walk with us and asked her to hold Vesta for a minute and gave her the leash. Then I took off running. My mom weighed about 93# dripping wet, so seeing Vesta do her best to pull mom across the field was priceless.

I was playing tug with my Dobe on my front lawn a couple of years ago, and a car stopped. They rolled down their window a bit and asked if I needed help or if I wanted them to call the police.
They thought I was seriously being attacked.

Dobes are one of the faster breeds out there, correct? Not much first-hand experience w/them but reading a bit about them and seeing a few YouTube vids leads me to believe that they can really haul.

I would say they are one of the faster ones. Their long legs and streamline heads and body.
They have Greyhound in them in their lines as one of the breeds they used to create the dog in the 1880s. They are really a mixture of sight/sent hounds and pointers.

As a kid we had an intact male GSDxCollie that would bolt out the door and run the neighborhood. (in my teens I did do some training with him) He had a set pattern of marking on bushes so one of us kids would run out after him, cut off his travel course and drag him home by the collar. The whole time Rex (never let your dad name your dog) would be growling and snarling like he was gonna tear our arms off. The neighbors were always out there telling us how they worried about him doing that. Funniest thing was we would play tug a war with him with our arms ...and get welts and some red spots from it. Not sure if we were very bright...or our dad for that matter, as he let us do it. But that dog NEVER bit anyone and lived to be 17yrs old.

Their true mix is unknown so we can only speculate. It is believed that Greyhound is in the mix, possibly the Beauceron, the German Pinscher and even the Black and tan terrier. Nobody really knows for sure, but Greyhound makes sense.
I've more often than not had a household filled with both Dobes and Greyhounds, and aside from a bit of a physical resemblance (and I mean SLIGHT. The Dobes are MUCH heavier boned have much heavier heads, broader chests, etc.) they don't have much in common, especially when comparing the Greyhounds with the German dogs who are notably stockier than the American lines.
The Dobes are crazy-fast, but nowhere near as quick as a Greyhound. I've seen them try though

Thanks for the input Kristel. I know you are a Dobbie fan to the core!
Yeah, they would get dusted by a Greyhound! Hahaha.
Here is the site where I referenced some of what I said in my earlier post.
They make it sound like fact, but in over 100 years, who know what is and is not fact.

I am for sure . And a former (?) breeder (maybe again someday, don't know). All the reference materials say something different, so it definitely makes their origin a little difficult to pin down

I have always wondered what make dobies so fast. Not just when they chase/run. Even a simple command like a Platz, they seem to just drop down lightning fast. I compare my dobies to little mustard seets that have been put in a pan of hot oil, they jump and crackle and hop around all over the place.
I would tend to think that Beauceron, German pinscher and the Black and Tan terrier is in the mix. They all seem to share the same markings over the eyes, foreschest, legs etc.
I would have thought that by now some one would have done a DNA analysis of the Doberman.
Please post some videos of your dobe chasing you for all of us to enjoy
