Ok here is the thing.... We got a JRT about 5 days ago. He is 1yr 9mo. He came from a family that played rough with him and I do not think that he had the proper pack structure. We are starting the training from scratch with the marker training.
When I leave the yard and come back in or walking around the house in my running shoes or slippers he gets down on his front legs and bites my shoes while I am trying to walk. When I am wearing sandals he grabs my pants. Personally I am thinking that he is telling me that I am not allowed to go anywhere without his permission but my husband is trying to tell me that he is trying to play with me. My husband almost pisses himself laughing and if I do not get this figured I am gonna have to surrender my husband
He did it a couple times with my husband and he stopped. All my husband did was give him a sharp "NO" No matter what I try he does it to me. Please help I have had my husband for 15 years I am kinda attached to him.

Hey Corina, I've only known you for 15 seconds and I'm laughing too. Put a leash on him with no handle. Its called a drag line. He is just playing but he's old enough to be corrected and told no.

JRT.
Lots of fun. How much exercise does the little weasel get?
Got any rats in the barn that need cleaning up? Any vermin ya need taken care of at all?
If not, the first thing I'd suggest is take him running with you.
You are training for the next ironman title aren't you?
Oh if not, get a bike. Then start working your arm strength up like you're going to try out for the major leagues next year. You can start by just throwing balls for the little guy for about four hours a day before taking him with you on your evening training run for the next up coming marathon.
I've never met a JRT that would sleep for food, but with some of the afore mentioned suggestions in place you can get his attention for some training using food.
Good place to help you out here at LB. 'Marker training' is a specialty to many here.
Hope that all helps Corina.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

Corina, there are Border Terriers in my family (same kind of crazy little bassid, as our most experienced terrier member calls them), and marker training was practically made for their personality, IMHO.
These mini-mals may need to have major exercise before starting your short, upbeat marker sessions so that they aren't in hyper-drive and jumping over your head in excitement when they figure out how much fun marker work is.
Don't give up on having a calm dog. Just not soon. One of my granddogs is 13 and he now takes occasional naps.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure in your reading on JRTs before bringing this little ball of energy into your home, you learned they are non-stop energy, super fun, intelligent and MUST have a job! While in the process of bonding with your new alligator with fur, keep a small tug, old dish rag/towel in your reach / pockets at all times. When he starts wanting to play and bite on your pants, give him something appropriate to latch on to and have fun with your new baby. (He IS still a pup, really). One of the balls sold here with the rope/handle attached is perfect - toss it and he will go kill that instead of your ankles.
EXERCISE, mind games, distracting him with the right things to chew on, bully sticks to gnaw on... you are gonna love this dog once you figure out how in the world to make good use of all that energy.
Does anyone remember the post about the video with the JRT Schutzhund dog? Gotta find that and let them know what FUN they can really have with this little squirt...

I have two terriers and at this point I am getting Landrollers (the ones Cezar Millan has). I can't wait for them to come in the mail. Maybe if I attach the skates to a generator we can disconnect from the grid with the amount of exercise these two need.....

Thanks so much for the feedback. Now I do not have to surrender my husband. Jack (I know original name :P) gets at least 3 walks per day, play time, ball throwing, tug and other fetch games)I am extremely glad to know he just wants to play and not stop me from going places. We have started the marker training and he is responding fast. Jack is not an overly excited dog, he relaxes quite a bit and even when we go outside he is pretty calm. He walks very well right beside our legs. So we are pretty happy with him. Jack already knows commands such as "sit" "wait" "down" and a few others, learned them within 3 days of us working with him.
We think we are dealing with some dominance issues. Dog on Dog and Dog on Stranger although when we introduced him to my step father they fell in love with each other. On leash when on a walk he does not bark at other dogs or people. But if someone else tries to greet him or come close he barks growls and lunges at them (we keep him on leash if we know there is someone else around). We are working on these issues like I said we are starting from scratch with marker training.
