Welcome Ricky!
Ugh how this story makes me just so sad and angry all at once.
You are so right, one more reason to stay away from dog parks!
I just don't understand why the officer didn't just remove his dog and leave? It did not sound like it was a K9 dog, but just his personal pet. Of course not having been there it is hard to make judgments, not knowing what really happened.
It is just very very sad that the dog was shot. Man, it makes me just sick, considering from the description that they recount of the dogs previous behaviors, he sounded like a sweet, loving dog.
I really hate stories like these, it's just so sad.
I have never been to a dog park, no plans to go even without a dog...makes me way to anxious with anticipation. Even the calmest, nonreactive dog may be 'pushed' into a reactive state. Call me chicken!
I do feel bad for the dog(s) in these type of stories, I want to say human error and the dog suffered, but maybe that isn't accurate either. Sad............
I will say this, I wish more people were more informed about the
potential dangers and risks associated with a dog park.
Unless you do have complete and total control of your dog on recall, they should just not enter or go there.
Personally, I have let my dogs play with some familiar dogs at a park before, however I only went once to an actual "dog park" before realizing that was the first and last time I will ever go to one again. That was before I read about them here on LB.
Just too many dogs running wild with no real control was my experience. It wouldn't take long to see an aggressive situation happen in the blink of an eye. That is the reason to just stay away period.
It does seem that a majority of people going to these dog parks are individuals who don't have control of their dogs etc.
Dogfights are not a pretty thing to witness, and I think that the average person out there is not truly aware of the real potential problems that can and do arise.
I sent my wife the story and she's upset that the officer had to shoot the dog. She feels a walking stick (I've been trying to sell her on the idea of getting one) would have been enough... or to shoot the ground or something else. This is just her opinion.
I wish the officer didn't have to shoot the dog, but I see his point. And yours Aaron.
But I think that when you enter that dog park, you surrender the right to keep other dogs from making contact with your dog at the gate. I really can't see how shooting the other dog can be justified in this case.
