I'm wondering if anybody knows or has any experience with dogs reacting to female hormones. Especially when a human female is menstrating. I've been working with german sheperads for just over 2 years now, but was on Depo-Provera birth control. Since going off it I have noticed that the dogs get aggitated and aggressive when I am menstrating. Is this real or imagined. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.
No, I don't think you're imagining it , I've experienced it too, but seem to get more of a reaction from the females. Jean Donaldson, director of behavior and training at the San Francisco SPCA, said dogs could sense small changes in our body chemistry, and I agree. Kind of sums up why dogs can be used to detect oncoming seizures in people too.

Ok I can't resist this! Maybe it was you acting differently rather ......Ok I'm a jerk I know. On the serious side, Dogs are able to sense changes on very minute differences like our breathing timing, heart rate, mood etc. This is why some dogs did so well in practise sessions and blunder at important competitions due to the handler's jitters actually.
Hope this contributes something.

When the dog is confused, blame not the dog but shoot the handler.

Careful there, buddy. No wonder why you got only a 1 star rating.
Ok My apologies here. In case people are mistaken, the earlier post was meant as a jovial gesture with some infos between the lines. BTW, never noticed the star.

Everyone is hitting all around it without getting to the core...LOL
What does a female dog do when she's in heat (read: ready to breed)? Bleed!
What do human women do when they cycle? Bleed!
Dogs have such an acute sense of smell, that no matter what you'd try to do, they'd smell the blood and the boys KNOW where it's coming from because it's not the same smell as if you were to bleed from an open cut. My boy gets knee'd out of the way every month when he gets "amorous" with my wife.
Although you guys are joking about this I have to say that my dog also exhibits a change in behavior each month. He acts the opposite of Mikes dog. He totally avoids me for a few days and sticks very close to my husband. Initially I thought he may be reacting to a previous experience when perhaps I may have been harsh with him when...well you know. But as time went on, I realized that there is more going on with this. My dog is more accurate than the darn calendar.
