Just curious. We have this active yearling GSD mix who is a hurricane when he's awake, and he gets his workouts physically and mentally. He goes in the crate and sleeps the majority of the time while we are at work, then he's out and about until bedtime, and back into the crate for 8 more hours or so through the night. Trust me, this one is vocal enough that if there was something about the routine he didn't like, he'd let us know, but it seems to be working out OK.
Once the weather is more bearable, he'll be outside in the yard during the day.
Anyway, he's sleeping about 16 hours out of 24 right now. How does that compare with your dog(s)?

I bet that compares to mine who is also a year. Even when I am home on a day off, she sleeps most of the day so I assume this is the norm when I am at work. She is outside in the yard when I am away at work, tho. Mornings are busy with walks, breakfast, bouncing around while we get ready for work. Afternoon till bed time, the same: training, more walks, bouncing around till bedtime.
What a rut.

My old girl probably sleeps 20 out of 24 hours a day, whether we are home or not.
My almost 5 year old is probably close to the 15 hour a day range, depending on what we are doing, but he spends a lot of time lounding around but not asleep.

You nailed it right there for me, Marcia. While I PREFER not to think of it as a rut, there are many days when I'd also PREFER to just relax a bit in the evenings. I can crate this guy some more and he'll occupy himself with a soup bone or a kong or whatever, but given that he's in there 16 hours anyway, I try to reserve the 'crate chewie time' for times when I really need it.

I am a wedding director at our church, so the majority of my part time work is done at home, so I'm here with Kasey a lot. We do pretty much the same as everyone else - morning breakfast, walk, training. But after that is done, he sleeps most of the time until late afternoon when my husband gets home and plays ball with him. He'll follow me around so he's never by himself, but whatever room I'm in, he's sleeping in there. I'd say he's sleeps 16 hours out of 24 too! I used to feel kind of guilty that I wasn't providing lots of entertainment, but he seems happy and content!

My dogs sleep about 16 hours too.
I don't think that's uncommon. I think I've read that 14-16 hours is most common, with a few breeds sleeping quite a bit more (Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards).
I've also read that they are pretty flexible, able to sleep less or more depending on the environment (SAR or rug-in-front-of-fireplace, say).
I like to have them tired when it's time for bed. Even though dogs wake up briefly much more often than humans do, I think a tuckered out dog goes right back to sleep easily.
Of course, there are exceptions. I've also read about dogs who apparently never sleep .... or at least refuse to be caught doing it.

My Mom's pup is almost two, and when not up at at 'em, he's sawing logs. I'd say 16 would be a minimum when he gets to run like he needs. My own girls are older but both are asleep all night and roughly half the day. Rose wakes up at the slightest turn of a doorknob, but sometimes I have to encourage Shortie with treats to get her out of her crate in the morning. I'd say she'd sleep 20+ hours a day if she gets some running or spring pole in. I have a tiny sample group to draw from, but I'd venture to guess that Shortstack's sleeping is breed-related.

Same here. Our 5 yr old sleeps at least 16 hours a day. Loves the crate in the shade/dark. Also learning to enjoy sleeping on the carpet by our bed.

That's too funny. At sunup every day, our guy comes out for his morning belly rub. He stumbles out of the crate and flops on his side like his legs couldn't carry him another inch. Couple rubs and a minute to wake up, then he's out the door - often times to flop again on the greeting mat. Usually doesn't take his huge pee until 15 minutes later when I come out with his leash.
I could be quite happy living the life of one of my dogs.
