Does anyone out there have a Dutch that talks? My guy grumbles and talks at every opportunity. Fairly cute, until non-dog people hear it! (we had company over this week, they thought he was going to eat them) Is this a breed trait I've never heard of, or do I just have a talkative dog?
Oh, and I do NOT think it's a dominance issue, or pack structure problem.

c'mon folks!!! Is the DS population out there that small that no one knows of a talking dutchie? Or is the Dutch forum just super slow?

Hi, I'm new on this board and have to say I love all the great information.
Can't answer your question about Dutchies talking, but if I ask my guys 'so what do you think' they will both talk back to me, it's not a growl or bark or howl, but it sounds like a funny mix of all 3, and they only 'talk' when I ask that question. LOL

This post caught my attention as I had someone tell me that their dog was "talkative" ,he ended up biting their kid in the face during one of these talkative moments. Describe the grumble, I think of "grumbling" in terms of a growl. This dog was a Malinois.
I have only met two dutchies, so I am not sure if they do this, for all I know they could be into yodeling, my daughter gets her DS pup in two weeks, a new crazy for the family!

Hi Kelly:
What do you mean by talking? Growling or?
My DS is very noisy. It's a "family" trait, exhibited by her dam, sire, and several brothers and sisters (full and half). The noise is mostly barking, but my lovely little DS has a habit of "screaming" when she's really excited as well.
The noise is pretty annoying, but she's cute and a good worker to boot, so I guess we'll keep her

Tammy- thanks for that insight- I really don't see it as a growl, I've heard this dog upset, and it's not the same as his 'talking' voice. But, I do have 2 kids, and he's a house dog. Always supervised with the kids though. Congrats on the new, to-be grand pup!!! EXCITING!!!!!
I can't type the sound he makes... lol. RawrRawrRawr? Maybe? What he really sounds like is a 5 yr old child voicing mild protest when you give him direction. Still does as you ask, but has to bitch a little about it.
Konnie- I'm glad to hear someone else has a cute dutchie who's loud! I don't know my guys lineage, he's a rescue. I have a feeling he's got a more significant % of GSD then many DS's, he's a SUPER dark brindle, and 80lbs at 1 yr old.

Kelly, I can't provide any insight to the DS vocalization. I have haven't had the opportunity to get to know one. I can tell you that my dogs grumble A LOT. I take note to the activity that is going on, etc. to determine if it is a blah, blah, blah or something else. Even though I can pretty much hear the differences, i still feel it important to not assume. I did have a newer guy that grumbled and it sounded like a blah, blah to me except that it was under protest with direction and his 'body language' was not relaxed. And for me, that was not acceptable form of blah, blah, blah.

Aimee- thats EXACTLY what Koenig is saying! 'blah, blah, blah' no tension in his body language, he always does as I ask. I've had a couple 'talking' dogs before, but this guy just takes it to an extreme! LOL. It's always when he's loose in the house, never in training, or when he's in drive. I just think it's funny.

No DS hear, but I have had two huskies and both of them talked incessently. With the first one it alarmed me at first between the ears being plastered to his head and the grumbly nature of it.
But I soon learned the difference between prick ear dogs and cats when they put their ears back and that he was just telling me about it.
I swear he would tell me entire stories and had a very large range of vocalizations. It was never as back talk, or during training, just when we were hanging out or when he was really excited to see us.
