Hard to concentrate on normal life, as Roger will arrive on Saturday. The breeder posted a few videos, and he totally distinguishes himself from the other dogs--rather than romping much with the pack, he stands assuredly with the people making the videos. So I'm very pleased and I feel that I made the right choice.
I bought a nice big airline crate last night, and have metal food bowls already.
He may come with a leash; if not I will buy one.
So, I know I'll need, at the bare minimum:
1. Food
2. 2-3 toys (rope tug, squeaker, ball)
3. lots of newspaper for the crate
4. Pet insurance
5. Intro Vet Bill (probably $500)
What else? Been reading this forum for a while but still feel woefully unprepared.

Make the puppy potty area ready. Select the destination, remove all the litter, rocks, sticks etc., spray with bleach solution.
If there are bushes, bare dirt etc. you might want to put a layer of ground cover to prevent digging or simply fence in the potty area.
I put some redwood chips in a fenced-in corner of the yard and Haydn goes there every time.
Why do you put newspaper in puppy's crate? The puppy will play with it and eat it and it will be a mess. Since you will be taking the puppy out for frequent potty breaks he won't be going in his crate and could use something more comfortable there.

He'll be crated while we are at work. I had thought of putting the paper in there to aid with the clean-up process but I could definitely see him chewing the hell out of it...thanks for mentioning that.
We live in an apt community so whatever potty area we choose will be maintained by someone who's not me.

The whole goal of crate training is to not let the puppy go in the crate - this becomes his bed and he learns to keep it clean. You introduce him to the crate (I use marker training) then you let him out frequently enough that he never gets a chance to mess in his crate.
How long is this pup going to be expected to hold it for the day?
If you plan on just letting him go in his crate and clean it up when you get home, you are going to end up with a dog who thinks it's ok to go in the crate and in the house - your "house training" is not going to go over very well.

Are you taking vacation time for potty-training? Or are you having someone come over to let him out every couple of hours at first, maybe later just a couple of times a day?
Have you read about the training here?
For outdoors, you'll need a supply of poop bags.

Ross, I'm pretty sure this is safety prep rather than lawn-maintenance work. You can choose the spot where the puppy goes by always leading him there.
He will need to go out a lot at first (in the night too). You want him always to be outside when he needs to be, or you will be fostering a habit you will be very sorry about (if he has no choice but to go inside).

Yeah. No point in reading it anywhere else.
Our breeder recommends a local trainer who has his own Mal and works in some area of LE. And yes, I know that "send-away" training is no good.
Wife and I are going to stagger our work time. So the longest he will go without going outside is about 6 hours. Too long?

I meant potty training.
Yes, 6 hours is way too long for a while.

If possible, hire a dog walker/puppy sitter/neighbor to come by at once during that six hours to take him out to potty - if not every two hours. You really, really don't want to come home to a puppy covered in poop and or pee nor do you want to force him to HAVE to relieve himself in his crate.

I would say that 6 hours for a new pup, is too long.
Plus there is the issue of teaching the dog that outside is the potty area.
I would think for a young pup, you would want to get him out every two hours, maybe three at the most.
I forget how long a young pup can hold it?
