With the dark nights of winter and the time change just a couple of months away I’m looking to get the pups some illuminating collars.
While camping, our friend had a bright purple one on his mastiff. It was just the neatest thing I’ve ever seen and we always knew exactly where she was when the sun went down, underfoot of course, but we knew she was there. However, it was quite bulky and cheaply made. She simply caught it on the edge of the picnic table and the snap area, housing the battery, broke. Unfixable, unusable. He said he paid 30.00 for it at a specialty sports car shop.
I was all prepared to have him (shop is out of town) pick up 3 for me (different colors) until this happened. I’ve looked at the one here: http://leerburg.com/1197.htm. They look great and the price is certainly right but it looks like they only come in red. This is okay if it’s the only option however, 3 different colors would be really great for easier identification if needed.
I’m sure the quality here is outstanding, which is first and foremost along with the safety of the device. Does anyone have any experience with these collars, good, bad or otherwise? E-collar and this collar combined – any connectivity or battery issues? And perhaps know if I can find quality in different colors - just a “nice to have” not necessarily a must.
I have a couple questions too, mind if I piggy back?
What is distance limit for visibility with these collars?
I want them for at the lake when the dogs go potty at night.
Right now I use glow necklaces that I pop in the freezer so they stay good all weekend.
There are 20 acres of fairly thick woods immediately surrounding the house and the minute the step foot out of the porch light area they simply disappear.
Scares the heck out of me, even knowing neither one is going to wander off.
Thankfully the underbrush within say 50 yards in all directions has been slashed, weedeaten and burned thanks to my dads obsessive love of yard work and slight pyromania.
Okay, so what happened to my link? One of these days I'm going to learn to navigate this site properly. Hey, at least I got had the search engine that time... lol.
That's not quite what I was looking at but I'm going to look at those and read the thread. Thanks Connie.
I used to have a few of the ones that clip on and hang from the collar, like this, but a different brand. They flashed in 2 colours, I had a purple/white and a blue/orange one. The dogs didn't notice them at all, and they worked for quite a distance... perhaps as far as I would be able to see the dog in the daylight. The only downside is that sometimes they would twist and the battery would disconnect.
I think that the hanging lights may be a better option for seeing the dogs at a distance.
Angela Burrell had a great comment on there and kind of was my concern too. When they are not facing you… have you found any problems with this, are you still able to see them? She said she likes the collars better but a short life expectancy. I wonder what time frame?
For the price of the Spot Lit, maybe a few of those for back up, if the collars wear out easily?
Love the association your pups make Connie!! I can’t so see that. Bright light, time to march.
